Career
Ethridge was born in Meridian, Mississippi, United States. He began performing in local bands in the South before heading to California at the age of 17. He was discovered in Biloxi, Texas. Before joining Gram Parsons in ISB, he performed with Joel Scott Hill; in 1971, Hill and Ethridge would record a trio album (L.A. Getaway) with drummer John Barbata, who is best known for his work with The Turtles and Jefferson Starship. He played with Parsons after the completion of ISB and then again after Parsons left The Byrds before cofounding the Burrito Brothers with him. On The Gilded Palace of Sin, he played bass and piano, but he was forced to leave before Burrito Deluxe due to creative differences. Ethridge briefly performed with him again when Parsons left the Burritos, including Byron Berline, Emmylou Harris, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, and Roland White in 1973. Ethridge was a member of the Docker Hill Boys, an informal group that included Gene Parsons and Joel Scott Hill, following Parsons' death. These three brothers founded the Burritos in 1975 with Sneaky Pete and Gib Guilbeau, who also appeared on Flying Again.
In February 1976, Ethridge joined the Burritos again, returning to session duties. He had performed with many well-known country-ting bands, including Nancy Sinatra, Judy Collins, Johnny Winter, Ry Cooder, Leon Russell, Linda Ronstadt, and Jackson Browne. He also performed with Willie Nelson's band for almost eight years, and later performed with the Kudzu Kings.
Ethridge died in Meridian, Mississippi, of pancreatic cancer complications, on April 23, 2012.
