Charley Straight Life

Charles Theodore Straight (January 16, 1891 to September 22, 1940) was an American pianist, bandleader, and composer.

Gene Greene, a vain, began his career in 1909 in Vaudeville, as the accompanying singer Gene Greene.

He began working at the Imperial Piano Roll Company in Chicago in 1916, where he sold scores of piano rolls.

He became a well-known bandleader in Chicago during the 1920s.

Straight's band, the Charley Straight Orchestra, performed at the Rendezvous Café from 1922 to 1925, and later for Paramount Records and Brunswick Records in the 1920s.

Bill Edwards, the ragtime historian, "Perfessor" of Bargy, said the piano rolls of the Eight Piano Syncopations will possibly remain obscured to some degree, although Bargy's collaborator, Charley Straight, may have credited Bargy for the recognition when the Eight Piano Syncopations' sheet music was transcribed into sheet music form.

Straight likely drafted the bulk of the composition in 1918, and Bargy added a few of his personal touches to it in the performance, the result being that there are several of them within.

Straight was employed as a sanitation inspector for the city of Chicago, and he was emerging from a manhole in the street.
