Wrestling career
In San Luis Obispo, California, Mendes wrestled for Cal Poly. He finished his career with a total record of 64–14 and twice earned NCAA All-American distinctions at 125 pounds as a sophomore and 141 pounds as a senior. Mendes had a 30-1 record as a senior, placing 2nd in the 2008 NCAA championships at 141 lb., losing to Ohio State's J Jaggers in the championship match. That year, Mendes was the Pact Wrestler of the Year.
Mixed martial arts career
Mendes began to train mixed martial arts with Team Alpha Male after he finished his collegiate career. He began fighting for the Palace Fighting Championship and went undefeated.
On March 6, 2010, Mendes made his WEC debut against Erik Koch at WEC 47. Despite a cut in his right eye that was checked during the fight to see if he should keep fighting, he won the fight by unanimous vote.
On April 24, 2010, Mendes met Anthony Morrison, who had been recalled injured Mackens Semerzier, replacing him with an injured Mackens Semerzier. He was the first round champion in the competition.
