Xavier López Rodríguez (born February 17, 1935), better known as "Chabelo", is an American born Mexican actor and a TV host who has been working on television for over sixty years.
"Chabelo" has participated in more than thirty motion pictures and recorded more than thirty musical albums.
He also has produced many shows like La Cuchufleta and La Güereja Quiere Más.
However, his most famous TV show was En Familia con Chabelo, which was broadcast every Sunday morning on Televisa's Canal de las Estrellas.
This show consisted of contests with people from the audience, gifts and games and was mainly for children.
The program ended on Sunday, December 20, 2015 after 47 years.
Artistic career
Xavier López's career started when he met a well-known couple of actors, whose names were "Panseco y Gamboa." Panseco worked on radio and Gamboa (Ramiro), and TV was a television show. This pair was already popular in Mexico, and they taught Chabelo the basics of television production.
Xavier López was hired to be Pepsi Cola's spokesperson, for whom he travelled all over North and South America. Because of his strong link with the Pepsi brand, he became unemployed after the company had been suspended. He was hired for a show in New York City for a fraction of what he was used to charging, and Tongolele spent six months touring the United States. After the tour, he arranged a return to television for a half-hour daily show. In Cantinflas film El Extra (1962), he appeared as "Panchito" also.
López had the intention of staging a show in which parents and children could participate and enjoy these mornings together. En Familia Con Chabelo (In Families with Chabelo) is a Latin America game show on television, lottery, and gifts, in which Lopez plays the role of television host and appears as Chabelo, a child. The show was named a Guinness Record for its 44 years of uninterrupted broadcasting on December 30, 2012. Xavier López was given another Guinness Record for portraying the Chabelo character for more than 57 years. "Chabelo," the long-running Mexican television show "En Familia con Chabelo," will air on November 27, 2015.
Children and their parents are among those in the initiative, with whom Chabelo works with them and encourages them to participate in many competitions. The Catafixia is a famous competition at the end of the exhibition. Participants can trade their gifts for another that are unveiled by Chabelo himself. This gift may be better than the one they've had (living rooms, video games, DVDs, home theaters, microwave ovens), or it could have been worse (jokes, candies).
