Cerrie Burnell Life

Claire "Cerrie" Burnell (born 30 August 1979) is an English actor, singer, playwright, children's writer, and former TV presenter for BBC children's channel CBeebies. Burnell was born with a right arm that ends just below the elbow.

Her first appearance on CBeebies sparked controversies surrounding children's television presenters with physical inability and apparent mistrust of complainants.

Early and personal life

Burnell's mother is a dance coach, and her father is a telecoms manager. She has one younger brother, John. She was originally named "Claire" but then people started asking "Cerrie" at the age of ten, but she began asking people to call her "Cerrie." Burnell grew up in Petts Wood, a south-east London suburb.

Burnell was born with her right arm ending marginally below the elbow. Her parents urged her to wear a prosthetic arm, but she stopped right away and stopped wearing one entirely when she was nine years old. Burnell had dyslexia, which made her unable to read until the age of 10. She learned through extra tuition and the Letterland system.

Amelie, Burnell's daughter, was born in 2008. She lives in Hackney, East London.

Cerrie Burnell Career

Acting career

Burnell graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University, where she concentrated on acting. She has appeared in theatre in the United Kingdom, where she has received rave reviews, and with the CTORio Political Theatre Company in Brazil. Burnell was also a member of the National Youth Theatre. She has appeared in Holby City, EastEnders, Grange Hill, The Bill, and Comedian Lab. She is the author of Winged – A Fairytale, a play about Violet, a one-winged fairy in a London inner city fair community that she appeared in when it was presented at the Tristan Bates Theatre, London, in 2007. She appeared in The First to Go by Nabil Shaban about the "Disable Holocaust" in Nazi Germany, and appeared as Brunhilde at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh in 2008. She has worked as a teaching assistant at a special needs school in addition to acting.

Burnell and Alex Winters joined CBeebies' presentation team on January 26, 2009, as a continuity presenter for Discover and Do and The Bedtime Hour.

The BBC faced controversy early in her first month of co-presenting, as parents claimed that the one-armed presenter was terrifying children, prompting difficult discussions to explain her disability. The problem, according to Sherwood, the BBC, and several disability organisations, was really the parents' prejudices that had been projected onto the children. Burnell joined CBeebies in April 2017.

Burnell appeared in Penny Stevenson's role in the Birmingham-based soap opera Doctors for a short time.
