Casey Martin (born June 2, 1972) is an American professional golfer and the University of Oregon's current men's golf head coach.
Early life
Martin was born in Eugene, Oregon, and he currently lives there. He was educated at Stanford University, where he was introduced to the Sigma Chi fraternity and was briefly a teammate of Tiger Woods for a short time. He was a three-time All Pac-10 champion and was a member of the University's NCAA Championship team in 1994. He won the 1993 Sahalee Players Championship and turned pro in 1995.
Personal life
Martin suffers from a birth defect in his right leg referred to as Klippel–Trénaunay syndrome. Martin successfully sued the PGA Tour, Inc., for the right to use a golf cart during competition under the Americans with Disabilities Act. He had limited success on the golf course during the years that the suit was ruled through the courts, and was still allowed to use a golf cart.
He misjudged a step between the street and his curb in October 2019, breaking his defective leg. During the Ducks' fall 2019 golf schedule, he took a medical leave from teaching, with assistant Brad Lanning taking over until he returned to campus for the spring season (which was ultimately postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic). Since his injury has prevented his fractured ankle from properly healing, he has been using crutches since returning to campus.
Martin expressed concern about the prospect of losing his leg in a March 2020 interview with The Register-Guard, Oregon's home of Eugene. Not 47, but 47, it seems, I expected it to happen at 27 not 47. But it has happened. I'm just going to do everything in my power to save my leg." He suggested an amputation, acknowledging that a prosthesis would enable him to walk without pain, but "if I lose my leg, it will be an above-the-knee contract, which is very risky for my situation." It's something that I've suspected could happen, but I'd rather not, owing to the dangers." Martin was supposed to fly to Washington state to be fitted with a special carbon-fiber leg brace, which might have a way to restructure his body weight in a way that would prevent the fracture from healing.
Martin underwent successful surgery to amputate his right leg in October 2021. The surgery was performed to allow him to continue using a prosthesis in the future.
Professional golf career
In 1998, he won a Nike Tour (later referred to Buy.com Tour, Nationwide Tour, Web.com Tour, and now Korn Ferry Tour) in a playoff, securing a five-year exemption from the first round of Qualifying School (Q-School). He also scored a career highlight by finishing tied for 23rd at the U.S. Open and briefly battling for the lead before falling back.
Martin earned a spot on the PGA Tour in late 1999 by finishing 14th on the Nike Tour money list. In 2000, he ranked 179th on the money list, but he failed to hold his card through his earnings on the PGA Tour. He started his PGA Tour cardholder for 2000 at the final stage of that year's Q-School, but barely managed to keep his position (finishing tied for 37th, when the top 35 and ties qualified) relegated him to the Buy.com Tour.
Martin stayed on the Nike Tour through 2003, but he failed to qualify for the Q-School finals in 2003, limiting him to a small number in 2004, a year in which he appeared in nine tournaments. Following the issuance of his five-year exemption from Q-School's first round, he climbed from the first to the second of the three rounds in 2004, but no further, and he had limited success in 2005, playing nine tournaments and making two cuts. In 2006, he attended five games, making the cut once for a total of $1,328.
Martin qualified for the 2012 US Open in June 4, 2012, winning a sectional at Emerald Valley Golf Club.
Coaching career
After serving as a volunteer assistant during the 2006 season, Martin was named head coach of the University of Oregon's men's golf team in Eugene, Oregon, in May 2006. He has stated that he wants to play more, where it fits in with his coaching schedule. Nevertheless, he did not compete in any professional sports or try Q-School in 2007 or 2008. Oregon captured the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships.
