Carolyn Laurie Kane (born June 18, 1952) is an American actress and comedian.

She made her name in 1970s and 1980s films, including Hester Street, for which she received an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination, Annie Hall, and The Princess Bride.

Simka Gravas, the wife of Latka played by Andy Kaufman, appeared on television series Taxi in the early 1980s, winning two Emmy Awards for her role.

She has appeared in regional productions and on Broadway from 2005 to 2014.

She appeared on Netflix original series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, in which she appeared Lillian Kaushtupper from 2015 to 2019.

Early life

Kane was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and the niece of Joy, a jazz guitarist, dancer, and pianist, and Michael Kane. Her family is Jewish, and her grandparents immigrated from Russia, Austria, and Poland. When she was 12 years old, her parents divorced. She attended the Cherry Lawn School, a boarding school in Darien, Connecticut, until 1965. She studied theater at HB Studio and then attended the Professional Children's School in New York City. Kane made her professional debut in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, starring Tammy Grimes.

On the American television series Taxi from 1981 to 1983, Kane portrayed Simka Dahblitz-Gravas, the wife of Latka Gravas (Andy Kaufman). For her role in the series, she was given two Emmy Awards.

Kane appeared in episode 12, season 3 of Cheers, as Amanda, an acquaintance of Diane Chambers from her time in a mental hospital.

Kane appeared on the 1986 film All Is Forgiven, a regular on the 1990-1991 series American Dreamer, a 1994 episode of Ellen, and a supporting role in the short-lived comedy Pearl.

Kane appeared in the Cinemax Comedy Experiment Ronnie: A Report Card with Jon Cryer and the Smothers Brothers in 1988.

She appeared in Alan Harper's receptionist's television show Two and a Half Men in January 2009. Kane appeared as Justin Suarez's acting instructor in the television series Ugly Betty in March 2010. Kane made her West End debut in January 2011 as part of Lillian Hellman's drama The Children's Hour at London's Comedy Theatre. She appeared alongside Keira Knightley, Elisabeth Moss, and Ellen Burstyn.

In May 2012, Kane appeared on Broadway as Betty Chumley in a revival of the play Harvey.

Kane has also known for her appearance in the Broadway musical Wicked as Madame Morrible, an evil headmistress who appeared in many productions from 2005 to 2014.

Kane made her Wicked debut on the 1st National Tour, appearing on stage from March 9 to December 19, 2005. She reprised her role in the Broadway production from January 10 to November 12, 2006. She appeared in the Los Angeles production, which debuted on February 7, 2007. She joined the production on December 30, 2007, then returned from August 26, 2008, until the production ended on January 11, 2009.

She continued to work with the Los Angeles company and appeared in the San Francisco production, which began on January 27, 2009. On March 22, 2009, she called an end to her brief association. Kane has been back to Wicked from July 1, 2013 to February 22, 2014 (a time when the show's tenth anniversary was celebrated).
