Early life
PenaVega was born in Columbia, Missouri, on August 15, 1989. His father is Spanish and Venezuelan, and his mother is Dominican. He was born in Weston, Florida. He was a cheerleader at Sagemont Upper School. He appeared in Grease and Man of La Mancha's local productions. He was also involved in the production of Titanic by the American Heritage School, which he attended before transferring to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. During his time in Titanic, he fell in love with singing and dancing.

After meeting at a Bible study in August 2013, PenaVega became engaged to actress Alexa Vega. PenaVega became the couple's married name in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on January 4, 2014. Career
His first acting role was on ER at the age of 15, followed by guest-starring roles on Judging Amy, Summerland, and Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. PenaVega appeared in television commercials for the Super Soaker brand recreational water gun, as well as on the toy's packaging, and he even appeared on television advertisements. When PenaVega's boss told him to audition for Big Time Rush, he was studying musical theater at the Boston Conservatory. Despite being reluctant to do so, he did audition tape and was able to land the job almost two years later. PenaVega moved to Hollywood in August 2009.

PenaVega wrote "Lost in Love" for his wife, Alexa PenaVega. On 24/Seven, he performed the song "Na Na Na" and wrote the lyrics. In addition, BTR took the Summer Break Tour to promote the album.
On February 4, 2014, he debuted "Electrico," his first solo single in Spanish. The song appeared in the top ten of the Latin iTunes songs charts. He was awarded for the first time at the first annual Nickelodeon Colombia Kids' Choice Awards in Bogotá. PenaVega appeared on Dancing with the Stars' 21st season in Fall 2015.
