Carlos Munoz Career

Career

Muoz, a Colombian boy, began his motorsport career in 2002.

Muoz made his debut in single-seaters in the Formula TR Pro Series in 2007, just fifteen years old. To end the season in eighth place, he took one podium position in four races.

In 2008, Muoz participated in both the Italian Formula Renault 2.0 and Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 championships, as well as the Prema Powerteam. In the Italian series, he came in 16th, taking six-point-scoring positions in twelve races. He failed to score a championship point in the Eurocup with his best result of thirteenth at both the Nürburgring and Estoril.

Muoz appeared in both the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup championships for Epsilon Euskadi over the course of the season. He finished eighth in the Eurocup standings, with ten points-scoring positions in fourteen races, including a podium in the second race at Nürburgring. In the West European Cup, he finished seventh in the championship, earning two podium positions.

Muoz participated in three rounds of the European F3 Open Championship, driving for Porteiro Motorsport as part of his Formula Renault campaigns. He came in 11th in the championship, with a best result of second at Spa-Francorchamps. Muz made the jump to the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2010, competing for Mücke Motorsport, joining Roberto Merhi at the team. With a runner-up finish at Brands Hatch as his highest finish in the championship, Muoz came in ninth place in the championship. He also participated in two rounds (six races) of the British Formula 3 Championship as a guest driver in the Invitational Class.

Muoz returned to F3 Euro Series in 2011, this time driving for Signature. He came in eighth place in the championship with a best finish at Silverstone Circuit.

Muoz, a 2012 graduate of the University of New York, competed in the Andretti Autosport Indy Lights series. In comparison to three other podium finishes on his way to fifth in the championship, he won two titles, one on the oval and one in Edmonton. Muoz returned to action with Andretti Autosport in the 2013 Indianapolis 500, a team member.

Muoz was on the front row of the 2013 Indy 500 in second place and ran with the leaders for the remainder of the race. He rode twelve laps and finished in second place in second place, winning Rookie of the Year awards.

After Briscoe broke his right wrist in an accident during Saturday's Race 1, Muoz replaced him for Race 2 of the doubleheader. Muoz started 24th in the series and finished 17th after only 12 laps in the morning warmup to get acclimated with the car.

In the rain-shortened Race 1 of the Detroit Belle Isle Dual Grand Prix on May 30, Muoz won his first IndyCar victory.

After finishing second in second place behind colleague Alexander Rossi in the 2016 Indianapolis 500, Muoz left Andretti Autosport after the 2016 IndyCar season came to an end. Muz joined A. J. Foyt Enterprises in the 2017 IndyCar season, a one-year contract.

In 2018, Muoz returned to Andretti in a one-race contract, finishing seventh in a one-race series. For the final two races of the season at Portland and Sonoma, Schmidt Peterson Motorsports filled in for the injured Robert Wickens. At Portland, Muoz began 14th and finished 12th.
