Carlos de León Career

Career

De León, a native of Trujillo, Puerto Rico, won his first world title when he met Marvin Camel on November 25, 1980, under the sponsorship of Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Durán's second fight in New Orleans. De León defeated Camel by a score of fifteen rounds. De León defeated Camel in eight rounds in a rematch later today. When his countryman Ocasio won the WBA world championship, De León and Ocasio became the second pair of Puerto Ricans to share world titles in the same division; Alfredo Escalera and Samuel Serrano were the first pair to do so in the 1970s in the junior lightweight division.

In 1982, De León lost his title to former Gerry Cooney victim S. T. Gordon by a knockout in round two, and he beat former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks by a knockout in round six. Gordon and Gordon rematch in Las Vegas, and De León dropped Gordon twice in the first round and once in the twelfth, leading to a unanimous decision in a history-making match.

He defended his title against Yaqui López by a knockout in four at San Jose, California, and with rulings over Anthony Davis and Bashiru Ali. The Davis bout took place in Las Vegas, California, and Ali's show was in Oakland, California. In a decision, De León lost his title in Las Vegas to Alfonzo Ratliff. Bernard Benton, who defended against De León on March 22, 1986, was defeated in turn by Ratliff. De León defeated Benton by decision after being inspired by Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali in becoming one of the few boxers to win one division's world championship at least three times.

He served in Italy for a few years, then defended the title against Uruguayan José Marlón in Atlantic City, New Jersey, winning by 12 rounds in a unanimous decision, but then lost his titles in the eighth round, also in Las Vegas, after losing by technical foul versus WorldBA and IBF world champion Evander Holyfield. Nevertheless, Holyfield pushed the division into the world heavyweight championship, and De León was left with an open door to smash his own record and win the title for the fourth time in a row. He returned to London to defeat Sammy Reeson, the WBC's top-ranked contender, by a narrow margin in the ninth round, smashing his own record and earning the title of world cruiserweight champion once more.

Carlos dominated the sport for two years before losing in Italy to Massimiliano Duran in an eleventh-round disqualification. He gained the award by defeating Sammy Reeson earlier this year. Before losing to Massimilano Duran, he made a defense by drawing with Johnny Nelson.
