Calvin Jerome Murphy (born May 9, 1948) is an American former basketball player who served as a guard for the San Diego/Houston Rockets from 1970 to 1983 and is a current member of the Houston Rockets' AT&T Sportsnet television broadcast team.
Murphy, who stands at 5 foot 9 inches (1.75 m), has the honor of being the youngest NBA player to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and to play in an NBA All-Star Game (the former was tied by Isaiah Thomas in 2016).
Early years
Calvin Murphy, a world-class baton twirler, was a twirler before basketball. As his mother and all six of her siblings were twirlers, he was "bullied into it." He won a national championship in baton twirling as an eighth grader in 1963. His fame as a twirler earned him invitations to appear at major sporting festivals and the 1964 New York World's Fair. Murphy captured the Texas State Men's Twirling Championship in 1977, during his basketball career in Houston.
He played basketball for Norwalk High School, where he was All-State three times and All-America twice. He is a member of the Connecticut Coaches Association Hall of Fame and a recipient of the Connecticut Sportswriters Gold Key Award. Calvin Murphy Rd, who attended Norwalk High School, has changed to 23 Calvin Murphy Rd. He was honoured in his memory.
Post-NBA life
Murphy continued to work with the Rockets organization in various capacities, mainly as a television analyst for Rockets games. On AT&T SportsNet, he is now the halftime and post-game analyst for local Rockets broadcasts.
In 2004, he faced a criminal assault accusing five of his children. In December of this year, he was cleared of these charges.
