He formed and performed drums with Garbage, who has sold 17 million albums in a ten-year span after being a success as a producer.
Vig had gone back to full time once Garbage went on hiatus in 2005.
The band reformed in 2010 to record material for their fifth album. Vig was ranked 9th in NME's Top 50 Greatest Producers Ever in 2012.
Early life
Butch Vig, a music teacher from Viroqua, Wisconsin, was born Bryan David Vig to Dr. DeVerne and Betty Vig. Chris and Lisa are Vig's two children. Because of his father's serious crew cut, Vig got the nickname Butch as a child. Vigo has been playing piano for six years. After seeing The Who perform on The Smothers Brothers, he traded his piano for a $60 drum kit.
Vig moved to Madison, Wisconsin, to study film direction.
Personal life
Vig is married to Beth Halper, a former DreamWorks A&R executive; they have a daughter, Bo Violet. They live in Los Angeles's Silver Lake neighborhood.
Career
Vig met his future Garbage bandmate Steve Marker while a student at the University of Wisconsin. Vig produced several electronic music soundtrack pieces to low-budget films, including one on Slumber Party Massacre, a Hollywood B-movie. Vig's fascination with sound manipulation sparked by this soundtrack work. Vig performed in a number of garage pop bands, including Eclipse, and together with Duke Erikson, Dave Benton, Jeff Walker, and Joel Tappero, there was a group of garage pop stars.
Vignette helped Marker build a home studio in Marker's basement the following year. Marker and Vig also started Boat Records, a small label that released Spooner's 1979 debut EP, "Cruel School"), and other bands they adored, which resulted in the publication of about twenty local acts. Vignette later described the self-producing process as "kind of a fire trial."
Vig and Marker formed Smart Studios in Madison in 1984, while still playing drums in Spooner at night and driving a taxi during the day. Vigien and Marker Davis formed First Person with Marker and Phil Davis in addition to a side-project called Fire Town starring Davis and Erikson, when Spooner lost momentum. Fire Town became Vig's first priority, and the first album was released to Atlantic Records. Michael Fondelli, an Atlantic recruiter, has been hired by Fire Town to work on their second album. Vig learned a slew of production techniques from the process, although the sessions did not go well and the resulting record sank. Fire Town was split off, and Vig made Spooner for a final album before Vig's production work became a full-time job for him.
Vig's first high-profile production work came in 1991, when two bands, The Smashing Pumpkins' Gish and Nirvana's Nevermind, were released. Vig used overdubs and vocal double tracking, although Nirvana's previous album, Bleach (produced by Jack Endino), had a more "lo-fi" sound. Kurt Cobain initially refused to double-track his vocals and guitars, but Vig allegedly persuaded him to comply by saying "John Lennon double-tracked." Although Cobain would later condemn Vig for the album's slickness, it might be due to Andy Wallace's mixing of the tracks. In a 1993 MTV interview, Cobain said that "Butch Vig...recorded the album to perfection." Billy Corgan lauded Vig's rich production on The Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream. This album received a warm reception both commercial and critical, as well as breaking another indie band into the mainstream. Besides that, Vig also released two critically acclaimed Sonic Youth albums, 1992's Dirty and 1994's Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star.
Vig worked on Jimmy Eat World's sixth album, Chase This Light, which was released in October 2007. He's currently working on soundtracks for two new movies. All or Nothing by the Subways, his first production for an English band, was in 2008. He was also with Against Me!, releasing their two Sire Records albums, New Wave and White Crosses, as well as working with singer Laura Jane Grace on her solo EP, Heart Burns. Vig produced the ninth studio album by Green Day, 2009's 21st Century Breakdown, which received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Vig has been partnered in positions with engineer and mixer Billy Bush, who has also worked on Garbage's albums and live tours.
Vig produced and produced the soundtrack for the film The Other Side. Vigil released two new songs for the long-awaited greatest hits by the Foo Fighters in 2009, most notably the single "Wheels" and their eventual sequel, Wasting Light, in April 2011. Vig produced Muse's single "Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)," which was included on the Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack in 2010.
Vig produced the soundtrack for Puppy Love, which also included tracks from Portugal, in 2020. The Man, LP, Mickey Avalon, Wayne Newton, and others.
"Part of the reason why I started Garbage was that by the time I'd finished 'Nevermind,' I'd seen 1,000 bands that were just guitar-bass-drums,' I swear to God.' I was reading about all the other records that I was getting excited about, including Public Enemy's use of a sampler in the studio, and I'd like to do a bit of a U-turn." They then recruited Shirley Manson, a Scottish singer, and began composing together.
"Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains" were two Garbage singles released between 1995 and 1996. Garbage's debut album, a worldwide bestseller, has sold over 4 million copies and been certified double platinum in the United Kingdom, United States, and Australia. At the 1996 MTV Europe Music Awards, Garbage received the Breakthrough Artist award. Since being nominated for two Grammy Awards, Album of the Year, and Best Rock Album, the band spent two years on sequel, Version 2.0, which topped the charts in the United Kingdom on its debut in 1998. Version 2.0 continued to grow in popularity with its predecessor. Garbage expanded this by appearing and co-producing the theme song to the nineteenth James Bond film The World Is Not Enough.
Despite being named one of Rolling Stone's Top ten Albums of the Year, Garbage's 2001 collection Beautiful Garbage failed to be as popular as its predecessors. Garbage quietly disbanded in late 2003, but in 2005, the band reformed to release Bleed Like Me, a career-best #4 in the United States, peaking at a career-high #4. The band called off their concert tour in favor of Bleed Like Me, announcing an "indefinite hiatus" who claimed that they did not break down but wanted to pursue personal interests. Vignette returned to writing in 2006, though Manson continued to perform on a solo album (as yet unreleased). Garbage came off hiatus in 2007 and released their best hits since Absolute Garbage. The band has sold more than 17 million albums around the world. In 2010, the band reformed themselves in 2010 and released Not Your Kind of People, their new album that was released internationally on May 14, 2012. Strange Little Birds was released on June 10, 2016.
Vig, Frank Anderson, and Pete Anderson formed The Emperors of Wyoming, an alt-country band formed in 2011. On September 17, 2012, they unveiled a self-titled album.
Vig's band 5 Billion Diamonds, a new musical project, debuted in 2017. On August 11, 2017, the band's first album was released. On November 20, 2020, the two Divine Accidents were announced.
