Brian Kelly McKnight (born June 5, 1969) is an American singer-songwriter, actor, arranger, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist.

McKnight is best known for his strong falsetto and belting range.

McKnight's work has earned him 16 Grammy Awards, although he has never been given one.

He is third only to Morten Lindberg and Snoop Dogg for the most Grammy nominations without a win.

Early life

McKnight was born in Buffalo, New York, to Claude McKnight, Jr., and Ruth Elaine Willis. He began singing in childhood as a member of his church choir, which was supervised by his grandfather. McKnight explored various genres of music, and he started composing instrumental music while learning to play various instruments in his early teens. McKnight formed a band and began playing his original songs at local venues. He had been offered a publishing contract by the age of 18.

Personal life

Julie McKnight, McKnight's college sweetheart, and singer-songwriter Joe McKnight were married in 1990. Brian Jr. and Niko are their two children. In 2003, the couple divorced.

Brianna McKnight is McKnight's daughter.

He began dating Dr. Leilani Malia Mendoza in 2014, and they announced their engagement in May 2017. McKnight and Mendoza were married on December 29, 2017. Julia, Jack, and Kekoa Matteo are three children who are in their family: Julia, Jack, and Kekoa Matteo. Infancy, Kekoa Matteo died.

Brian McKnight was raised as a Seventh-day Adventist. Many generations in the McKnight family were Seventh-day Adventists, and religion was extremely important. His grandfather, a pastor of a church, and his mother, a pianist, performed in a gospel choir in Buffalo's Emanuel Temple. McKnight, the youngest of four boys, was a member of a cappella gospel quartet with his brothers. He attended Oakwood College, a Seventh-day Adventist university in Huntsville, Alabama, from 1987 to 1989. McKnight's second year was in danger for breaching Oakwood's rules prohibiting visitors from visiting his girlfriend in his dorm room. Both were banned from the program.

In 1990, McKnight's older brother, Claude McKnight III (and his band Take 6, announced a landmark contract with Warner Brothers. McKnight began to sell his own demo tapes, and by the age of 19, he signed his first recording contract with Mercury Records affiliate Wing Records. Brian McKnight's self-titled debut album was released in 1992 and ranked at number 58 on the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at number 58. On the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Albums chart, his first album, "The Way Love Goes," debuted at number 11 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Albums chart. The ballad was also on display, as well as the Top 20 single, "One Last Cry." It was followed by two more albums for Mercury, I Remember You (1995), and Anytime (1997). Anytime, McKnight's last album with Mercury has sold over two million copies and was nominated for a Grammy. At the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, Darren Grant's video for "Anytime" directed by Darren Grant was selected for Best Male Video. For Walt Disney World's 25th anniversary, McKnight produced "Remember the Magic" in 1997.

McKnight first signed with Motown in 1998 and released Bethlehem, the first of five albums he released on Motown.

McKnight appeared on Sister Sister in 1998. He appeared in numerous episodes as Tia and Tamera's college professor.

McKnight's 1999 album Back at One, his most commercial album to date, has gone on to sell over three million copies. Besides, Back at One is one of four of McKnight's studio albums to reach the top ten on the Billboard 200 albums chart, debuting at number 7 on October 9, 1999.

McKnight co-wrote the song "Wait" with Australian soul artist Guy Sebastian, which appeared on Sebastian's Beautiful Life album in 2004.

McKnight joined Warner Bros. Records in late 2005 and released the album Ten in December 2006. It was his first studio album for the label. "Find Myself in You," which appeared on the soundtrack to Madea's Family Reunion 2006 Tyler Perry's "Used to Be My Girl" and "What's My Name" were three singles from the album.

McKnight made his Broadway debut in the show Chicago in October 2007.

McKnight Morning Show, a radio show with Pat Prescott on KTWV The Wave in Los Angeles, was on display between 2006 and 2010. On KHJ-FM, Smooth Jazz 95.7 The Wave in Houston, Texas, was briefly simulcast. On 98.7 KISS FM in New York City in January 2009, McKnight hosted "The Brian McKnight Show" on January 2009.

He sang the National Anthem for the 1997 NBA All-Star Game in Cleveland, Game 6 of the 2002 World Series in Anaheim, California (near his Los Angeles home), and the 2005 Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Detroit. He has also appeared on numerous other "National Anthem" appearances throughout his career. In addition, McKnight performed "God Bless America" in the 7th inning of the National League Champions Series in San Francisco on October 22, 2012.

McKnight posted to YouTube on April 23, 2012, describing Billboard's description of it as a "filthy sham." "Let me tell you how your p—y works — Since you didn't bring it to me first," Billboard quoted this lyric from the film. McKnight's new, more adult-oriented publications, such as MTV, the Toronto Sun, and NewMediaRockstars, have also written about the McKnight's latest, more adult-oriented efforts. McKnight and Funny or Die revealed that the single was a result of the two teams' collaboration shortly after its debut. McKnight later revealed that he wrote the parody as a commentary on the state of R&B, which he described as a period of decline overall with the loss of 98.7 Kiss FM shuttering and hit singles being poor quality music, among other things.

McKnight's album Better released "Uh Oh Feeling" the first track from his album Better on August 14, 2015. It was released on his own brand, Brian McKnight Music LLC, by Kobalt Label Services. On February 26, 2016, a better version was announced. The album has received glowing feedback.

McKnight's first live CD, DVD, and Blu-ray collection, which is twenty years since his studio album Anytime), was released on September 23, 2016 (in collaboration with independent record label SoNo Recording Group via the Universal Music Group). The show was shot at the historic Saban Theatre in Los Angeles. The collection includes fourteen songs performed live with his entire band as well as three new and recorded songs. In September 2016, the first single, "Everything," debuted on the national Adult Contemporary charts, placing it at # 20. The concert's CD version debuted on the Billboard R&B chart at number 13, as a Hot Shot Debut. On the album "Brothers in the End," Gino Vannelli's duet was also included. On the Billboard Music DVD chart, the Blu-ray and DVD versions of the launch debuted at number 9 on the Billboard Music DVD chart at number 9.

On August 25, 2017, McKnight released Genesis. "Everything," "Forever," and "I Want U" were three of the Top 30 Urban AC and AC hits: "Everything," "Forever" and "I Want U." Genesis made its debut on the Nielsen SoundScan Top ten New R&B Albums and Top 20 Recent Hip Hop/R&B Albums. Tim Kelley, a member of the legendary duo Tim & Bob, produced the album.

In January 2018, McKnight was nominated for two NAACP Image Awards. He was nominated for Outstanding Male Artist and Outstanding Album for Genesis (alongside Bruno Mars, Charlie Wilson, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z and Mary J Blige).

McKnight revealed in May 2018 that he was working on his forthcoming studio album, Bedtime Story, which would be 60 minutes of "for the bedroom aka baby-making music."

Brian McKnight appeared on The Masked Singer spin-off The Masked Dancer as "Cricket" in 2021.
