Brian Maxwell Life

Brian Leigh Maxwell (March 14, 1953-2004), a Canadian track and field expert, track coach, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

He founded PowerBar, a leader in the manufacturing and nutritional products for athletes.

Maxwell had no intention of running as a marathon runner, but lacked the endurance to be competitive at shorter distances.

Despite being told as a youth of his congenital heart disease, he persevered, and by 1977, he was ranked third among all marathoners in the world by Track and Field News.

At the age of 51, he died as a result of a heart attack.

Early life

Maxwell grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he attended Victoria Park Secondary School (now Victoria Park Collegiate Institute) and was a member of the Victoria Park Track Club (not affiliated with the club). Dave Steen, a Commonwealth Games shot put gold medalist, was coached by the club. When at Victoria Park, he received the Arnold Trophy for excellence in academic and athletics, given by George Arnold whose sons had been outstanding track & field, football, and basketball players.

Maxwell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was on the Golden Bears track team in 1975. He received the Brutus Hamilton Award for outstanding student on the team, named after the University's long-time coach.
