Bret McKenzie Career

Career

McKenzie met Jemaine Clement, a fellow student who was also studying film and theatre while attending Victoria University of Wellington. They didn't complete their degrees but ended up living together and then formed Flight of the Conchords, which later became So You're a Man.

Since becoming Flight of the Conchords, the Conchords have toured internationally and released four CDs: Folk the World Tour in 2002, The Distant Future (which received the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album) in 2007, and I Told You I Was Freaky in 2009. The Conchords developed a six-part improvisational comedy radio show for the BBC, and they appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, the Late Show with David Letterman, and Craig Ferguson's The Late Late Show.

The Conchords received their own 12-part HBO series Flight of the Conchords after a huge success on HBO's One Night Stand in 2005. Its first season aired from June to September 2007, and its second season premiered on HBO 18 January 2009. In a special edition of the Australian magazine Who, McKenzie was ranked 2007 Salon "Sexiest Man Living" and 2008's "100 Sexiest People" alongside Clement. The pair toured in 2012, 2016, and 2018.

McKenzie has appeared on and off since his debut in 2000, a small part in the UK series Shadow Knight, which was shot in Wellington. He is best known for his role in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy outside of the Flight of the Conchords television adaptation. His silent role in the first film as Figwit gained little internet fame, prompting Jackson to give him a role in the third film. In Lord of the Rings, his father, Peter McKenzie, portrayed Elendil. McKenzie was cast as The Hobbit's elf Lindir in April 2011.

McKenzie and Australian comedian Hamish Blake costarred in Two Little Boys, a New Zealand feature film that was released in New Zealand in March 2012. In the 2013 film Austenland, he appeared as a supporting actor.

In "Elementary School Musical," the season premiere of the 22nd season of The Simpsons, featured him and conchord Clement as a pair of camp counselors.

McKenzie has been involved in several ventures outside of Flight of the Conchords. McKenzie performed with The Black Seeds in the late 1990s, and he released four albums with the band before abandoning around 2007. During his tenure, the Black Seeds had some minor radio hits, and they continue to be extremely profitable throughout the region. He released music under the name The Video Kid in the mid-1990s, as well as his album Prototype. He helped create the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, which was active into the 2010s.

He began writing and recording solo in the late 1990s, and later toured New Zealand with a group that included musicians Age Pryor and Nigel Collins.

McKenzie moved to Los Angeles in order to be the music director for The Muppets during the summer of 2010. He went on to write four of the film's soundtrack's five original songs, "Man or Muppet" and "Life is a Happy Song," among others that were nominated for Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards and Satellite Awards for Best Original Song. "Man or Muppet," the Academy Award-winning song at the 84th Academy Awards in 2012, was voted Best Original Song.

McKenzie wrote the original songs for the 2014 film Muppets Most Wanted, as well as songs for other children's films such as The Pirates! Misfits and Dora and the Lost City of Gold from Misfits and Dora. The 2016 Sainsbury Christmas advert, starring James Corden on vocals, has earned another credit. On several occasions, he has written songs for The Simpsons.

McKenzie's debut solo album, Songs Without Jokes, was released on Sub Pop in August 2022. The publication will be followed by a lengthy tour in New Zealand, Great Britain, Ireland, and North America. Steely Dan, Randy Newman, and Harry Nilsson's songwriting inspired the album.
