Pieter van Jaarsveld, professionally known as Bobby van Jaarsveld, (born 6 March 1987) is a South African Afrikaans-language pop singer-songwriter and actor.
Early life
Van Jaarsveld, who was nicknamed "Bobby" after his father's death, was born in Paarl, Western Cape, on March 6, 1987. He is the second of three children and has two sisters, one of whom is also a singer (Karlien van Jaarsveld). Before matriculating from Brits High School as an infant, he attended many primary schools.
Personal life
Van Jaarsveld is a professed Christian. He and his partner, Annatjie van Jaarsveld, who married in January 2011, have two sons Sion and Leben, as well as a daughter named Armani.
Career
Van Jaarsveld began his professional singing career in high school before being asked to record his debut, and he released his first solo album in his last year. After receiving three nominations from the Klein Karoo Nastrale Kunsteefees, Vonk (a local music publication) and Huisgenoot Tempo magazine, he received the award for Best Newcomer at the Huisgenoot Tempo Awards in 2006. Van Jaarsveld, the grand champion of this category, appeared at the Skouspel Extravaganza in Sun City and went on to do so until 2011.
Theuns Jordaan Productions gave Van Jaarsveld a recording contract in November 2006. His first album, 'n Duisend Ure, was released later this year, and album sales topped gold status. Coleske Artists' second album, Net Vir Jou, was released in 2009. Each of the tracks on the album were created and performed by Van Jaarsveld. Album sales reached platinum within eight weeks and have since earned double platinum status with eight3,000 units. Spieltjie and Net Vir Jou are two songs from the album.
On DKNT, a local music collection on DStv, Van Jaarsveld was named Viewers' Favorite Artist award for 2001. "Spieltjie," a song from his second album, took Best Afrikaans Song at both the Huisgenot Tempo and Vonk Awards this year. In 2012 and 2014, he continued to release two more albums, "Wat Geld Nie Kan Koop Nie" and "Maak 'n Wens."
Van Jaarsveld was the lead role in the Afrikaans film Liefling – Die Movie, which was released by Hartiwood Studios South Africa in November 2010 and raised R16 million at the local box office. He appeared in the film As Jy Sing in 2013. Van Jaarsveld is a judge on the local singing competition The Voice SA, as of January 2016.
