Robert Jenns Rock (born April 19, 1954) is a Canadian musician, sound engineer, and record producer best known for assisting rock bands and musicians like Metallica, Tragically Hip, Aerosmith, Miami, Mötley Crüe, 311, Our Lady Peace, Bryan Adams, Michael Bublé, Black Veil Brides, David Lee Roth, and Ron Sexsmith.
Production career
Rock is best known as a producer for heavy metal bands such as Metallica and Mötley Crüe. He has worked with Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Blue Murder, the Moffatts, Cher, the Cult, David Lee Roth, Skid Row, The Misfits, The Desolators, Monn Arden, Robert Sexsmith, The Offspring, 211, The Moffatts, The Cretch, Cher, the Cult, No. 21, Our Lady Peace, Tonic, Nelly Furtado, Nelly Furtado
Rock briefly returned to action, founding the band Rockhead with ex-Payolas drummer Chris Taylor. Before disbanding, the band released one self-titled album and two singles. In late 2008, Rock released the five finalist songs of the CBC Sports' Hockey Night in Canada Anthem Challenge.
Rock was selected to produce Metallica's Diamond-certified (16.99 Platinum) self-titled album in 1990 (also referred to as The Black Album). He'd continue to produce Load (1996), ReLoad (1997), the band's latest tracks, Garage Inc. (1998), and St. Anger (2003).
As Jason Newsted left Metallica in January 2001 and was the bassist on St. Anger's few live performances until Robert Trujillo joined the band in February 2003, he also wrote and performed all of the bass guitar parts. Rock was prominently in the 2004 documentary film Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, which dealt with Metallica's internal strife and their struggles with the creative process during the recording of St. Anger.
Metallica selected producer Rick Rubin to produce their new album in February 2006, putting an end to the band's long-time friendship with Rock. Rock appeared onstage at Metallica's 30th Anniversary Concert on December 10, 2011 and performed bass alongside Trujillo on "Dirty Window" and "Frantic."
