Blake Martinez Career

College career

Martinez played in fourteen games and had his first tackle of his college career against Duke University as a true freshman with the Stanford Cardinals in 2012. He was given the Stanford Greg Piers Service Team Award for his efforts on defense at the end of the year.

Martinez's second year as a coach in 2013 featured in ten games and had 11 tackles (seven solo). He had six tackles, prompted a fumble, and had his first career interception in his first game of the year against the California Golden Bears. He was named an Academic All-Pac-12 honorable mention at the end of the year.

Martinez had a breakout season in 2014 and played in 13 games; in three of those games, he had over ten tackles. He intercepted back-to-back passes that had been thrown by quarterback Jared Goff, the first overall draft pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, in what was arguably his best game of the season. This marked Goff's highest number of attempts without an interception. In a third and goal situation for Daniel Lasco, he also caused a fumble. Martinez later said that finishing off the game the way he did was "huge." He spent the year with a team-leading 102 tackles and was named an All-Pac-12 honorable mention, as well as Phil Steele's All-Pac-12 third team.

Martinez was a member of the All-America preseason and his All-Pac-12 First team as a senior in 2015. He played in 14 games and finished with a team-high 141 tackles (75 solo), 1.5 sacks, and six pass breakups. Associated Press and Phil Steele announced him and the All-Pac-12 first team by the Conference for his efforts.

Professional career

Martinez, a senior footballer for the Dallas Cowboys, competed in the Senior Bowl on January 30, 2016. He was one of 39 college linebackers to attend the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. Martinez finished all drills, finishing second in the three-cone drill, third in the bench press, and 11th overall in the 40-yard dash.

Martinez attended Stanford's pro day on March 17, 2016 and opted to stand on the majority of his total numbers, but only did the 60-yard shuttle, vertical leap (34"), and positioning drills. Representatives and scouts from all 32 clubs attended, including Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly and Bills general manager Doug Whaley, as well as Buffalo Bills' general manager Doug Whaley. He played for various organizations, including the Atlanta Falcons and the Philadelphia Eagles, in particular. He was expected to be a fourth to sixth round pick by NFL draft specialists and scouts at the conclusion of the pre-draft process. NFLDraftScout.com rated him as the sixth best inside linebacker prospect in the draft and the tenth best linebacker by Sports Illustrated.
