Bismack Biyombo Life

Bismack Biyombo Sumba (born August 28, 1992) is a Congolese professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He was selected with the Sacramento Kings' seventh overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft and then drafted to the Charlotte Bobcats (now Charlotte Hornets).

Early life

Biyombo was born in Lubumbashi, Zaire, to parents François and Françoise Biyombo, Billy, Biska, and Bikim, as well as three brothers, Bimeline, Bikelene, and Bimela. At age 16, he competed for Lupopo in the 2008 FIBA Africa Club Champions Cup, Africa's top senior league, in Lupopo.

Coach Mário Palma discovered him at the age of 16 at a youth tournament in Yemen. Palma's son's appearance wowed him the opportunity to train in Spain.

Biyombo joined Fuenlabrada-Getafe Madrid of the EBA in the 2009–2010 season before heading to CB Illescas of the LEB Silver league. He appeared with CB Illescas from 2010–11 before moving to Baloncesto Fuenlabrada of the ACB in January 2011.

Bismack Biyombo Career

Professional career

On January 9, 2011, Biyombo made his debut in the Spanish ACB League against DKV Joventut, scoring 5 points and 7 rebounds in less than 13 minutes of action. In Fuenlabrada's narrow loss to Real Madrid, he recorded 6 points and 3 blocks, one of which was against former Spanish League MVP and Spanish national team player Felipe Reyes.

Biyombo was a member of the 2011 Nike Hoops Summit (against the USA Select Team) and scored a triple double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 blocks. It was the first time a Summit-double was recorded.

In the 2011 NBA draft, Biyombo was drafted seventh overall by the Sacramento Kings, but his rights were eventually sold to the Charlotte Bobcats in a draft night trade. Biyombo agreed to a multi-year contract with the Bobcats on December 19, 2011. Biyombo's minutes and subsequent production dropped sharply in 2013–14 as he fell out of favor with coach Steve Clifford, who averaged only 2.9 points per game over his first two seasons with Charlotte.

The Bobcats changed their name to the Hornets ahead of the 2014-15 season. Although Biyombo's strengths in defense and rebounding deteriorated in 2013-2014, he returned to form in the 2014–15 season, despite missing seven out of the first eight games of the season, largely due to Jason Maxiell's acquisition in the 2014 off-season. Biyombo, center Al Jefferson, was dropped into the starting lineup after his late-December injury. The Hornets refused to extend a qualifying offer to Biyombo on June 30, 2015, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Biyombo agreed to a two-year, $5.7 million contract with the Toronto Raptors on July 18, 2015. He appeared for Team Africa at the 2015 NBA Africa exhibition game on August 1, 2015. In a 106-99 win, he made his Raptors debut in the team's season opener against the Indiana Pacers on October 28, with 7 points and 5 rebounds. Biyombo began playing in 18 straight games between mid-November and late December, when Jonas Valanas was recovering from a fractured hand. In a loss to the Charlotte Hornets on December 17, he scored 8 points, a career-high 18 rebounds, and a career-high 7 blocks. In a 103-99 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, he scored 9 points and a then career-high 20 rebounds. On December 30, Biyombo returned to a bench position. Valanca is back in the starting lineup in mid-March, with Valanas suffering from injury once more. In guiding the Raptors to a 101-94 victory over the Indiana Pacers on March 17, 2016, Biyombo scored a career-high 16 points and set a franchise record with 25 rebounds. In a 105-97 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on March 30, he scored seven points and six rebounds, assisting the Raptors in their first season in franchise history.

With a 56–26 record, the Raptors were ranked second seed in the Eastern Conference during the regular season. The Raptors met the seventh-seeded Indiana Pacers in Game 5, and Biyombo led the Raptors to a 3–2 series lead. The Raptors won the series 4–3, then moved on to the second round, where they will meet the Miami Heat. Biyombo scored 17 points and 16 rebounds as a starter in Game 7 of the Raptors' series with the Heat, assisting the Raptors in their 116-89 victory and advancing to the conference finals for the first time in franchise history. Biyombo set a record with 26 rebounds in Game 3 of the conference finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, bringing the Raptors' advantage over the Cavaliers to 2–1. In six games, the Raptors continued to lose the series.

Biyombo became an unrestricted free agent on June 7, 2016, after losing his $2.9 million player option for the 2016–17 season. Biyombo later stated that he wanted to re-sign with the Raptors, but the Raptors did not have enough salary cap space to make it possible.

Biyombo and the Orlando Magic signed a four-year, $72 million contract on July 7, 2016. Biyombo was sentenced to one-game suspension in the 2016-17 season after exceeding the flagrant foul ceiling in the 2016 playoffs. In a 108-82 loss to the Detroit Pistons, he made his Magic debut on October 28, scoring two points in just under 23 minutes. He scored a season-high 15 points against the Denver Nuggets on January 16, 2017. He tied for the first time against the Dallas Mavericks on February 11, scoring 15 points. Against the Washington Wizards on March 5, he posted a season-high 15 rebounds.

In a 98-95 loss to the Brooklyn Nets, Biyombo scored 13 points and a season-high 17 rebounds. In a 125–119 loss to the Washington Wizards on January 12, he scored a career-high 21 points. In a 105–100 win over the Dallas Mavericks on April 4, he had 12 points, 12 rebounds, and a career-high five assists.

Biyombo was recalled to the Charlotte Hornets in a three-team contract on July 7, 2018. In a 123–110 loss to the Denver Nuggets on January 5, 2019, he scored a season-high 16 points.

In a 102–101 victory over the Detroit Pistons on November 27, 2019, Biyombo scored a season-high 19 points, as well as 9 rebounds and two blocks. He logged a season-high 17 rebounds, as well as 11 points and a block against the Indiana Pacers on December 16, 2021.

On November 30, 2020, Biyombo re-signed with the Hornets. In 19 minutes against the Utah Jazz, he scored a season-high 13 points, as well as four rebounds and one assist. He had a double-double with ten points and 12 rebounds against the Los Angeles Lakers on April 13, both in the NBA and ten. Against the Detroit Pistons on May 1, he had a season-high five blocks off the bench. On May 13, Biyombo scored 13 points against the Los Angeles Clippers, where he also had seven rebounds and one assist.

After the 2020–21 season, Biyombo became an unrestricted free agent. In part, he did not sign with any team until 2021, partly because he was mourning for the death of his father, François. He began a 10-day contract with the Phoenix Suns on January 1, 2022, under the COVID-19 hardship waiver. Since displaying some good results during his 10-day contract, Biyombo decided to stay for the remainder of the season on January 11. Biyombo had 17 points and 14 rebounds on January 17, the first two rebounds in January. Biyombo finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists on the bench five days later, on January 22, Biyombo scored 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists. Biyombo was a starter again from January 26-29, due to injuries to Deandre Ayton and JaVale McGee. The Suns were undefeated in the games Biyombo played from January to at least the 2022 NBA All-Star Game.

The Suns re-signed Biyombo on July 5, 2022.
