Billy Eugene Owens (born May 1, 1969) is an American former professional basketball player who played for several teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
He played college basketball for Syracuse.
Born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Owens played for Carlisle High School.
Amateur career
Owens, a high school senior, averaged 34 points per game and helped lead Carlisle High School (Pennsylvania) to four straight state titles. He was deemed the second best prep player of 1988, behind Alonzo Mourning. In the McDonald's' Game, Owens and Mourning were co-MVPs. Owens drew some comparisons to Magic Johnson throughout his career due to his strength, ball control, and passing skills for his height.
He averaged 17.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.1 steals per game out of 103 games during his three seasons with Syracuse. He was named Big East Player of the Year in his junior season.
Professional career
He was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the 1991 NBA draft as a 6'8" small forward/shooting guard from Syracuse University. However, Owens was traded to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for high-scoring guard Mitch Richmond after he stayed a holdout beyond the regular season. Mitch Richmond, Tim Hardaway, and Chris Mullin were among Mitch Richmond's "Run TMC" trio's that were deemed "complete" by the trade; Owens' additional height in comparison to Richmond was expected to complete the team, according to coach and general manager Don Nelson. Nelson said he was "under pressure to make [the team] bigger" to develop the Warriors from a good team to a great one.
During his tenure with the Warriors, Owens averaged over 15 points and nearly eight rebounds, with one of them being named in 1992 as an NBA All-Rookie First Team pick. In his first season, the Warriors went from 44 to 55 games won. However, he never had his desired effect and spent only three seasons with Golden State. Owens spent ten seasons with the Warriors, Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings, Seattle SuperSonics, Philadelphia 76ers, and Detroit Pistons before a string of injuries brought his career to a close end in 2001.
