Early life
Bird was discovered in Pocatello, Idaho, at the age of eight, while attending an orphanage. She appeared in vaindeville, including the King Sisters, and then in theater/cabaret before heading to television and film as a youth.
Personal life and death
Bird was married to Edwin Sellen before his death in 1966; the pair had three children together.
After several years of Alzheimer's disease, the bird died in Granada Hills, California, on November 27, 2002. She is buried in Glendale, California, in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Career
She is listed in the 1921 film Grass Widowers, but it is uncertain if this is correct. Originally, she fell into film in 1950, making a brief, uncredited appearance in The Odd Couple as a chambermaid. Her only line was "Goodnight," which was said to Felix Ungar, who replied, "Goodbye." Bird appeared in several of his 1980 and 1990s films, including Sixteen Candles, Home Alone, and Dennis the Menace, the latter two of which featured veteran Hughes actor Bill Erwin playing her husband. Mrs. Lois Feldman appeared in Police Academy 4 as Mrs. Lois Feldman. Pauly Shore made her last film appearance in 1995's Jury Duty.
Bird appeared on numerous television shows, including roles on Happy Days, Silver Spoons, Ironside, Eight Is Enough, Who's the Boss, and Knots Landing. She appeared on It Takes Two from 1984 to 1986, and 1986, starring Judd Hirsch, was also a regular cast member. Hirsch, Bob Newhart and Bird's former co-star, appeared on a brief appearance in 1997 on an episode of George and Leo.
"Flying High With Billie Bird" was a bird that entertained troops in Vietnam with her own variety act. She was one of the few women to be named an honorary member of the Green Berets for her efforts.
