Belmiro De Azevedo Life

Belmiro Mendes de Azevedo (17 February 1938 – 29 November 2017) was a Portuguese entrepreneur who was ranked by Forbes as the world's best individual (2008) as well as Portugal's second richest with an estimated income of US$ 2 billion.

He had a majority interest in Sonae SGPS, one of Portugal's most prominent company groups, which also operates in Spain, Greece, Germany, Italy, Turkey, and Brazil. Sonae is Portugal's most prominent in real estate and retailing, but the company also invests in telecommunications, tourism, venture capital, and media.

Sonae began a bitter attempt to block Portugal Telecom (PT), the country's largest telecommunications operator. Azevedo, a carpenter and a tailor's son from Marco de Canaveses, obtained a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Porto as well as an MBA from Harvard University. Azevedo's shares were sold to the estate of late banker Afonso Pinto de Magalhoes, who, through his bank Banco Pinto de Magalhes, who who completely owned Sonae.

During the turbulent years following the 1974 Carnation Revolution, which resulted in the government's seige of Sonae, Magalhes put Azevedo in charge of the company's seizure.

It was the company's success during those years, as well as the successful reclaim of the bank's assets that caused the deceased banker's sons' ownership, which led to the death of his sons, Maria Cláudia Teixeira de Azevedo, who married him in Porto, on November 29, 2017.
