Life
Berardo was born in 1944 in Santa Luzia, Funchal, Portugal, and the son of Manuel Berardo Gomes and Ana Rodrigues. Berardo left school at 13 years old and joined a low-ranked job in Madeira's winery industry. He immigrated to South Africa where he worked in horticulture production and then established large commercial ventures, becoming one of the twentieth century's most prominent and wealthy Portuguese entrepreneurs. He founded Ethi Consolidated Mines Ltd, a gold extraction company in South Africa. Initially, the gold extraction was carried out on low-value waste lands that had apparently been ignored. The mining company also dealt with diamond mining later in the decade. Berardo returned to Portugal in 1986.
Joe Berardo, a prominent stock investor, became well-known for his statements as an activist shareholder and the resulting media mania at times. His companies included hotels, cigarettes, animal foods, telecommunications, banking, and wines. Berardo's estimated total income, which includes stocks in major Portuguese banking and telecommunications companies, was at a time when it was over €1.9 billion.
Berardo made long-term investments in Millennium BCP bank and Portugal Telecom (PT) telecommunications operator, which were both listed on the Euronext Lisbon. He was instrumental in the fight against Sonae.com's publicized takeover bid over Portugal Telecom in 2006. Sonae.com's takeover bid, rejecting Belmiro de Azevedo (founder and historic chairman of Sonae's company) and his son Paulo Azevedo (head officer of Sonae's telecommunications boss), failed to the investor Berardo and PT's administrators Zeinal Bava and Henrique Granadeiro.
Berardo made a bid for 60% of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, a division of the Spanish S.A.D. The shares are priced at €3.50 a share, down 30% from the previous stock price. However, the stock fell slightly to below €3 apiece on Benfica's IPO in May 2007, when the team's fourth-place finish in the Portuguese Liga and the team's inability to make any significant progress in European competition. Berardo's bid was not hostile, as reports indicated that Benfica's leadership had been briefed in advance and was generally in favour of the bid. The bid was worth €31.5 million and was conditional on Berardo netting half of the company's worth in order to ensure control. S.L.'s value was determined at the time. Futebol, S.A.D. Benfica - Futebol, S.A.D. At €52.5 million. Berardo did not refuse to include a significant interest in the Futebol, S.A.D., which may have been able to be achieved within the publicly traded stock market's 33% free float that was first released in May 2007. Berardo, a S.L. citizen, is a paying member. Benfica (sócio) and a self-supporter of the club failed to become the club's biggest individual stockholder since only 1% of the planned stock was delivered to him before the deadline on August 20, 2007.
Berardo refocused his attention on his hometown club, Sport Martimo, of which he has also expressed his love for and is a registered member. He was awarded a silver medal on November 17, 2007, as part of the club's 97th anniversary celebration. He used the occasion to announce his involvement in the club's new stadium plans, the Estádio do Martimo, and offer his assistance as a "supporter with passion" for the team.
