Barbara Jefford Life

Mary Barbara Jefford, OBE (born 26 July 1930), is a British Shakespeare actress best known for her appearances with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Old Vic, and the National Theatre, as Molly Bloom in James Joyce's Ulysses in 1967.

Early life

Mary Barbara Jefford was born in Plymstock, Devon, and the niece of Elizabeth Mary Ellen (née Laity) and Perpetual Francis Jefford. She was born in Taunton, Somerset, and attended Weirfield School. Before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where she was given the Bancroft Gold Medal, she attended the Hartly-Hodder School of Speech and Dramatic Art. She obtained small parts in the radio production of Westward Ho! in 1946, although she wasn't yet a student. She appeared in 1949 and other radio plays, but her stage debut came in 1949 as she appeared in Twelfth Night at the Dolphin Theatre in Brighton.
