Early life
Butler was born in Anaheim, California, on August 17, 1991, the son of Lori Anne (née Howell), an aesthetician, and David Butler. When he was seven, the two married. Ashley (born in 1986) was his older sister, who appeared as a background actor with him on Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide.
Butler was 13 when he was approached by a representative from a background acting management firm at the Orange County Fair who aided him in getting him started in the entertainment industry. He discovered that he loved it and soon began taking acting lessons.
Butler did not attend public school until the seventh grade when he decided to be home-schooled to accommodate his work schedule. When he took the CHSPE to complete his formal high school education, he continued his home-schooling until the tenth grade.
Personal life
Butler enjoys making and recording music, and he taught himself guitar at the age of thirteen and piano at sixteen.
Butler was in a relationship with actress Vanessa Hudgens from 2011 to 2020. Butler has been in a friendship with model Kaia Gerber since late 2021.

Career
Butler obtained his first regular job as a background actor on Nickelodeon's Declassified School Survival Guide in 2005, after being an extra on several television shows. Lindsey Shaw, her co-star, introduced him to Pat Cutler, who then signed him and introduced him to powerhouse agent Jackie Lewis, who later launched his career. Butler began seriously acting as a profession from that point.
Butler appeared on the Disney Channel show "iCarly" in May 2007, and in September of the same year, he played Jake Krandle opposite actress Miley Cyrus.
Butler appeared in an episode titled "Princess" in February 2008, and in February 2008, he appeared in another Nickelodeon series Zoey 101, the love interest of Jamie Lynn Spears' title character Zoey, in the fourth season.
Butler appeared in Aliens, the Attic's family adventure film starring Jake Pearson, alongside Ashley Tisdale, Carter Jenkins, Robert Hoffman, Kevin Nealon, and Doris Roberts in July 2009. Butler wrote this week, "I worked with Ashley once and then heard about the film because she called me and said, 'Austin, I want you to come and read for the director for this,' I think you'd be perfect." He booked Wilke on ABC Family's Switched at Birth in 2011. In the same year, he committed to play Zack Garvey in the Lifetime TV film The Bling Ring, directed by Michael Lembeck, based on a hacker group that threatened the homes of Hollywood's celebrities. On September 26, 2011, the film was released. Butler appeared on NBC's Are You There, Chelsea? in January 2012.
Butler continued to appear in youth-oriented television series, but he gained more fame for his leading roles in The Carrie Diaries and later The Shannara Chronicles, which led to new stage and film production in his early teens.

Despite the fact that he had limited screen time, his success has been described as "intense" and "brooding." Butler appeared in Elvis Presley in a biographical film directed by Baz Luhrmann in the same year. He has expressed appreciation to Denzel Washington for his ability to play the role. The film premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival on May 26, the longest at the year's festival; it also opened the Guadalajara International Film Festival on June 10, 2022. Butler's career was lauded, as well as praise from the Presley family. In a few interviews, he even admitted that he didn't sleep for the first two years, citing: "It was the most frightening thing I've ever done."
