Early life
Kronvalds were born to a tailor family but were raised by the priests of Durbe. He became a private tutor after studying in Liepja. He began studying medicine at the University of Berlin in 1890, but he left after half a year because he ran out of funds. He returned to Latvia, where he resumed teaching in Durbe as a private tutor.
