Arve Isdal (born 28 August 1977, Bergen, Norway), also known as Ice Dale, is a Norwegian musician and producer. He is best known for being the guitarist of progressive black metal band Enslaved.
He is very active in the Norwegian metal scene as both a member of several bands and a session player for others still.
After Tom Cato Visnes left the hard rock band Audrey Horne, Isdal played the bass parts on their second album Le Fol and continues to perform with the group.
He is a part of the death/black metal band Trinacria, which includes members of Enslaved and the noise group Fe-Mail; and a newly formed project with Immortal guitarist Harald Nævdal.
He has also been session-guitarist for Ov Hell and lent his voice to a character on Metalocalypse in the episode "Dethmas". Career
Isdal was first inspired by hard rock bands like Kiss, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple, as well as progressive rock bands like Pink Floyd and King Crimson, before finding heavy metal. In the mid 1990s, he formed his first band, Malignant Eternal, and appeared on their album Alarm in 1999. He joined Enslaved in 2002 and has since appeared on nine studio albums with the band, beginning with Below the Lights in 2003. He is also a member of Audrey Horne, a hard rock band in which he plays guitar and bass.
Isdal's participation in the black metal supergroup I in 2006 was one of their album Between Two Worlds. Isdal founded Trinacria in 2008, which in turn released the album Travel Now Journey Infinitely. Some other Enslaved plus the noise-rock group Fe-Mail, Inc. He made a guest appearance on Bourbon Flame's self-titled debut album in the same year.
Isdal, joined by some of his Enslaved cohorts, appeared in a 2009 episode of the animated series Metalocalypse. Isdal appeared on the Ov Hell album The Underworld Regime in 2010, and the following year he appeared on the Demonaz album March of the Norse. In the 2020s, he will continue to work full-time with Enslaved.
