Arletty Life

Léonie Marie Bathiat (15 May 1898-July 1992), also known as Arletty, was a French actor, singer, and fashion model.

She was found guilty of treason involving a German officer during WWII, but she maintained her career, which included playing Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire's French version.

Early years

Arletty was born in Courbevoie (near Paris) to a working-class family. She left home and pursued a modeling career after her father's death. Based on Guy de Maupassant's heroine, she took the stage name "Arlette." She was not keen on acting before she met Paul Guillaume, an art dealer. He recommended some theaters, but she was drafted at the age of 21.

The music hall dominated her early career, and she performed in both theaters and cabaret. Arletty appeared on stage for ten years before her first film appearance in 1930. Arletty's career began in 1936, when she appeared as the leading lady in the stage plays Les Joies du Capitole and Fric-Frac, in which she appeared opposite Michel Simon. Blanche appeared in the French version of A Streetcar Named Desire.

Marcel Carné was known for his poetic realism filmmaking style. Arletty's minor role in Raymonde in his film Hotel du Nord attracted notice for her "Atmosphere." Atmosphere performer at its best. In 1945, Arletty appeared in her most film role, as the central part of Garance in Les Enfants du Paradis, her fourth film role for the director. She received one of the highest salaries in French cinema ever for this job.
