Playing career

Milford's junior rugby team in Acacia Ridge began playing for the Souths Juniors. He attended Forest Lake State High School and St Peter Claver College in Ipswich, Australia, in 2009, and was selected for the Queensland and Australian Under 15 Schoolboys. In 2009, he was a student at the University of Queensland and Australia Schoolboys, representing both the Under 15 and Australian Schoolboys sides. Milford played for Souths Logan Magpies in 2010 and represented Queensland Under 16s. Milford's rugby league program began in 2011. Milford won by defeating New South Wales on 12-18 points in 2012.

Milford joined the Canberra Raiders in 2012, leading their SG Ball team to the Grand Final, where they lost 42–20 to the Balmain Tigers. Milford made his debut for the Oakland Under 20's team in 1985 at the age of 17. Milford played 14 games, scoring 13 tries, and helped the Raiders advance to the Grand Finals, where they lost to the Wests Tigers 66-7. Milford was supposed to be drafted in the Junior Kiwis against the Kangaroos in September 2012 before he officially pledged his allegiance to Australia's birth country. In November 2012, he was granted a new Canberra Raiders contract, retaining him in Canberra until 2014. Milford was selected in Queensland's 2013 Junior Emerging Origin Squad in December 2012. Milford spent 2013 with Canberra's NRL squad in the pre-season, despite having two years left of NYC eligibility. Milford made his NRL debut for the Canberra Raiders against the Sydney Roosters in Round 5, playing off the interchange bench in Canberra's 24-22 victory over Canberra. Milford scored his first and second NRL tries in Canberra's 30-20 loss at Remondis Stadium in Round 10. Milford was named captain and halfback of Queensland Under 20s State of Origins, scoring a try in the 36–12 loss to the New South Wales Under 20s at Penrith Stadium.

Josh Papali, a teammate of Milford and Canberra, was fined by the club on August 31 for reportedly intoxicating two days before Canberra's 50–16 loss to the New Zealand Warriors. Milford finished his rookie season in the NRL by winning 18 matches and scoring nine tries. Milford was a candidate for Rookie of the Year. Milford was named in the QLD Maroons 22-man squad for Game 2 to be selected for the final interchange bench spot in June, but New Zealand Warriors Forward Jacob Lillyman was selected for the final spot over Milford. Milford played his State of Origins at five-eighth on Monday, with some spectacular footwork and solid defense before being suspended in the 53rd minute due to a concussion in the 28-4 loss at Suncorp Stadium against New South Wales. Milford sustained a shoulder injury during Brisbane's 24-18 victory over Suncorp Stadium and was supposed to be out for six weeks, but the Newcastle Knights returned early in Round 19 against the Newcastle Knights on Saturday, scoring a try. Milford's season ended with him playing in 23 games, scoring 7 tries and kicking 21 goals for Brisbane. Milford, who was in line for either Australia or Samoa, missed the 2017 Rugby League World Cup due to his shoulder injury.

Milford was late to the interchange bench after the injured seasoned fullback Billy Slater was ruled out of action due to illness, and Michael Morgan was filling in in Game 1 of the 2018 State of Origins series. Milford's deal with South Sydney fell through due to legal issues. The Newcastle Knights attempted to sign a deal with Milford in April, after his legal proceedings were finalized. While he completes educational and rehabilitative services, the NRL gave him conditional registration to train with the Newcastle outfit, but he will not be allowed to play before round 11, which will take four weeks. During Newcastle's 42-12 loss to Manly Warringah in Round 18, he was sent to the sin binge for a professional foul. Milford and the Newcastle club announced on July 18 that after the 2022 NRL season, the club will return to Queensland, as a result of the two-year contract with The Dolphins. Milford was sent to the sin binge for an unlawful shoulder charge against England's Sam Tomkins in the first match of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. Samoa lost the game 6-6. Milford was suspended for one game as a result of the incident.
