Anthony Burger Life

Anthony John Burger (June 5, 1961-February 22, 2006) was an American pianist and singer most closely associated with Southern gospel music.

Early life

Anthony Burger was born in Cleveland, Tennessee, to Richard and Jean Burger. He was walking his baby walker and fell into a heating duct on the floor of his house at eight months old. He had third degree burns on his hands, face, and legs. Burger's doctor told his parents that he would not be able to move his hands in the future after suffering the burns. Despite the odds, Burger recovered. He was accepted at the Cadek Conservatory at Chattanooga at the age of five. Burger was playing classical piano repertoire for a few years as a child. Burger attended Bradley Central High School in Cleveland but did not graduate.

Anthony Burger Career

Career

Anthony Burger at the Lowrey Organ was Burger's first album, which was released in 1975 when he was 14 years old. In 1976, he appeared on The Celestials' album Ole Fashion Gospel. He joined the Kingsmen Quartet at the age of sixteen and remained with them until March 1993. During that time, Burger completed nineteen projects with the company, and was named the Favorite Pianist in the Singing News Fan Awards for an unprecedented ten years. For many years after that, the award was renamed the "Anthony Burger Award." During this period, Burger gave the award to the winner each year but was ineligible to receive it.

Burger left the Kingsmen Quartet in 1992 to pursue a career as a solo pianist. He joined the Gaither Homecoming Tour the following year and was featured on more than 65 Homecoming videos. Burger continued to perform piano solos and headline shows, but his solo schedule was limited by about 80 Gaither Homecoming dates per year. Burger formed "The Trio," an impromptu sideline group that included Ivan Parker and Kirk Talley around 1998, adding more variety to his schedule. Throughout the year, the company appeared at several festivals around the country. (Shane Dunlap was later replaced Parker).

Burger was known throughout his life to tell how God healed his hands and that playing the piano was his way of praising God. Throughout his career, Burger worked with gospel saxophonist Dan Traxler. In 2020, their album, "Classic Gospel," was released on streaming platforms, including Spotify.

Burger also released a number of piano folios, allowing fellow keyboard players to perform his arrangements throughout his career.

Burger was honored just after the turn of the century when the Hazelton Brothers began selling a "Anthony Burger Signature" model. Burger was announced in late 2005 by Steinway & Sons, making him the first Southern Gospel pianist to hold that distinction.
