He continued to play high school basketball at Providence High School in Charlotte, where he was named a McDonald's All-American after his senior season, in which he averaged 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game.

Antawn Jamison Career

College career

Jamison played three seasons of college basketball at Chapel Hill's University of North Carolina, averaging 19.0 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. He was named both the Naismith and Wooden Awards for his junior year as the best male college basketball player in 1997-98. In 1998, Jamison decided to forego his senior year of eligibility and join the NBA draft. He later returned and received a B.A. Afro-American and African studies, who graduated in August 1999.

Jamison's #33 was redesigned at the Dean E. Smith Center on March 1, 2000, becoming the seventh Tar Heel to be honoured.

Professional career

Jamison was drafted with the fourth pick of the 1998 NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors, who later sold his rights to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for former North Carolina teammate and best friend Vince Carter. Jamison spent the first five years of his NBA career with the Warriors. He scored a career-high 51 points on two occasions, back-to-back against Seattle and the Lakers (the Warriors won the game). In 2000-2001, he scored a career-high 24.9 points per game in his third season in the league.

Jamison was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in a nine-player contract that saw him, forward Danny Fortson and Chris Mills, guard Ji Welsch, and center Nick Van Exel, center Evan Eschmeyer, guard Avery Johnson, and forwards Popeye Jones and Antoine Rigaudeau join the Warriors. Jamison's first winning season in 2003–04 as the Mavericks finished 52-30 and made the playoffs, marking the first time Jamison had played in post-season play in his career. Jamison was named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year for his efforts. The Mavericks suffered in the first round after losing in five games to the Sacramento Kings, putting the Mavericks in a setback.

Jamison was traded to the Wizards for former Tar Heel Jerry Stackhouse, Christian Laettner, and a first-round draft pick (which turned out to be University of Wisconsin–Madison point guard Devin Harris) at the end of the season.

He was named to the NBA All-Star team for the first time in his career, and the Wizards saw their best showing in 26 years in 2004–2005. They also made the playoffs for the first time since 1997, and they advanced to the second round for the first time since 1982. Jamison competed for the US national team in the 2006 FIBA World Championships, winning a bronze medal.

In the first round of the 2007 playoffs, Jamison led the Wizards against the Cleveland Cavaliers. During the season, Jamison averaged 32 points and ten rebounds per game.

Jamison was selected to his second NBA Eastern All-Star team during the 2007–08 season. Jamison agreed to a four-year, $50 million contract with the Wizards on June 30, 2008.

Jamison was traded from the Los Angeles to the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of a three-team, six-player trade that brought Al Thornton from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Washington Wizards, ydrnas Ilgauskas, a 2010 first-round pick, and the right to Emir Preldi from Cleveland to Los Angeles, Stephen Gooden from Washington to Los Angeles, and Sebastian Telfair from Los Angeles to Cleveland on February 17, 2010. Jamison had only two points from two free throws in his first game against the Charlotte Bobcats, going 0 for 12 from the field. Jamison scored 19 points against the Orlando Magic in his second game with the Cavaliers. The Cleveland Cavaliers made the NBA playoffs as the team with the best record in the NBA. In five games, the Cavaliers defeated Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls, but the Boston Celtics lost in six games to the Boston Celtics. Jamison's teammate LeBron James left the Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh this week.

The Cavaliers had little success in the 2010–11 NBA season, a record 26-game losing streak was set by the franchise in 1983. With a 126–119 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, the streak was effectively snapped. Jamison said in January 2011 that he was considering retirement and that his 2011–12 season would be his last. Jamison was fouled and broke his left pinky on February 27, during a loss to the 76ers. He underwent surgery and will be out the remainder of the season. He finished his 14th NBA season in 2011–12 with averages of 17.2 points and 6.3 rebounds.

Jamison signed with the Los Angeles Lakers for the minimum in NBA history on July 25, 2012. He scored a season-high 33 points and grabbed 12 rebounds against the Denver Nuggets on November 30, becoming the first Laker since Shaquille O'Neal in 1998 to play in a 30/10 game as a reserve. Coach Mike D'Antoni did not play him for multiple games, partially because of Jamison's inconsistent shooting and subpar defense. He played against the Los Angeles Clippers for the first time after being on the bench for six games. He was in the first quarter against the Denver Nuggets on January 6, making a jumper for his first points since December 13. He played for four minutes before being suspended for the remainder of the game. Since forward Pau Gasol was out with a foot injury, Jamison rejoined the Lakers' regular rotation. Their relationship with D'Antoni has soared dramatically as a result of early communication difficulties.

Jamison signed with the Los Angeles Clippers on August 28, 2013. Jamison scored a 3-pointer in the second quarter against the Boston Celtics on December 11, 2013, becoming the 39th player in NBA history to reach this milestone.

Jamison was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for the right to Cenk Akyol on February 20, 2014. The Hawks waived him the next day.

Jamison came from the NBA in 2014.

Jamison is one of only two players (along with Tom Chambers) to have earned more than 20,000 or more career points without being elected to the Hall of Fame.

Post-NBA career

Jamison deviated from professional basketball and became a television analyst for the Los Angeles Lakers in October 2014.

Jamison was hired by the Los Angeles Lakers on October 3, 2017 in a scouting role. He was recruited by the Wizards in August 2019 to become their director of pro staff.
