Bening appeared in Hedda Gabler at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles for the first time in ten years. You don't often hear Bening's voice in the films, particularly when she's playing virtuous, "sensible" roles. But Ibsen's antiheroine, a woman grappling with her inner troll, belle of a ball that never arrives—is neither virtuous nor sensible. She's no simple-to-read villain, not just a vindictive brat, though a number of actresses have reduced her accordingly. Bening's venomous sarcasm weaves in heavy, but she's cagey enough to prevent reductive extremes."
