Anne Flournoy Career

Career

Louise Smells a Rat, Anne Flournoy's first short film, was made in 1982 by recutting snippets of other people's films and borrowing a song. The total budget, which was just over $1,000, was based on lab fees. Louise Smells a Rat is "an elliptical spy tale based on Johnny Ventura's driving merengue." It was made from twenty-four hours of discarded 16mm prints that were distilled to four and a half minutes." Louise Smells a Rat premiered at the New York Film Festival. The film can be seen on YouTube. Louise Smells a Rat was on display at the 29th London Film Festival in 1985.

The short film Nadja Yet was produced in 1983. It's a tale of obsessive teen love, adapted from Turgenev and starring Jenny Wright.

How To Be Louise, a "coming-of-age tale" about an aging young woman with a bad job, high hopes, and a misguided interpretation of what it means to be a woman. Its U.S premiere in 1990, its European premiere in the Berlin International Film Festival's Panorama, and the New York Times rated it as a three-star film.

The Louise Log is a comedy based on "the confessions of a New York City wife and mother who are determined to get it right despite her over-active inner voice." In a desperate attempt to break out of a cycle of delays, the series was released on the last day of 2007. In the third role, Christine Cook ruled Louise in the first two series; Morgan Hallett took over in the third -- "a woman dealing with her husband, children, an intricate ensemble of prominent characters, and her... thankfully overactive inner voice." The series has completed 44 episodes to date, with more planned.

Flournoy was one of the ten Filmmakers to Watch in 2012.
