New statue of Queen Elizabeth II is unveiled - and this time it actually looks like her!

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 11, 2024
A distinctive statue of Queen Elizabeth II was unveiled today in Newcastle-under-Lyme to celebrate the town's 850th anniversary. Commissioned by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, the statue's design is inspired by photographs of Her Majesty taken during her visit to the town in 1973 (inset), which marked the 800th anniversary. The statue, crafted from bronze and weighing one ton, stands at one-and-a-quarter times life size and is positioned just inches above ground level in the town's Queens Gardens. Funding for the project was provided by two major donors: JCB, the Staffordshire digger manufacturer, and Capital&Centric, the developers leading a multi-million-pound regeneration of Newcastle's town center, with each organisation covering half the cost. Simon Tagg, Leader of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, said: ''This wonderful statue of the late Queen Elizabeth is unique to Newcastle-under-Lyme and inextricably linked to our history and our celebrations of the town's 850th anniversary.

During a fire in quaint Dorset town, the 'arsonist' was arrested by a police detective who 'liberately torched 13 cars.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 17, 2023
Today, a man is being investigated by police in connection with arson attacks (fires left and inset; aftermath top and bottom right) on 13 vehicles in a small market town following a suspected street to street rampage on a motorcycle. Following a string of vehicle fires last Sunday night, the suspected arsonist, who is in his 40s and local to Wimborne, Dorset, was arrested. In the fires, not only the 13 cars but two houses, including the one where a family was sleeping at the time, were also destroyed.

When BHA considers updating new whip rules, a proposed ban on forehand strikes could be withdrawn

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 16, 2022
When tighter regulations were introduced in February, jockeys can use the whip only in the backhand position, so the BHA's argument on Friday night that jockeys can use the whip only in the backhand position could be dropped. However, the sport's governing body said there will be no delay in their package of steps, and that any change would require riders to make compromises in other areas. In July, new laws were released, including tighter penalties for breaking whip rules and disqualifying runners if a rider commits a serious misconduct, but jockeys have expressed reservations about the practicality of some of the changes.
