Andreas Mikkelsen Career

Career

Mikkelsen has a broad background in sports. He has competed in slalom and giant slalom as a member of the national juniors' alpine skiing team. He competed in motocross in 2003 and 2004, as well as representing the national junior team.

Mikkelsen began competing in rallies in the United Kingdom and Ireland after turning 17 and obtaining a British driver's license. He won the Quinton Stages, the Plains, the Bulldog, and the Cambrian Rally in Estonia as well as the Saaremaa Rally in Estonia. He rode a Ford Focus RS WRC. In 2007, he came in 38th overall in the Donegal International Rally in his Ford Focus, finishing almost an hour behind eventual winner Sébastien Loeb.

Mikkelsen debuted in the World Rally Championship in 2006 and then resigned from the 14th special stage after going off the road. He competed in eight WRC events in the 2007 season, as well as in the Irish Tarmac Championship and the Norwegian Rally Championship. At the 2007 Rally Ireland and tenth in Norway and Portugal, his best WRC performances were ninth and tenth respectively.

Mikkelsen received exclusive coaching from Ford's former double world champion Marcus Grönholm for the 2008 season. Despite having major issues with turbocharger on Friday's circuits, he posted his best result of his WRC career so far by finishing fifth in the 2008 Swedish Rally, defeating Matthew Wilson's 2006 record of being the youngest driver to score points in a WRC event. Although not completing his final year in college, he intended to participate in all of Europe's championship rounds.

Mikkelsen was involved in an accident on his car and killed a 10-year-old spectator, killing her instantly during Rally Larvik in September 2009.

Mikkelsen finished second in the 2010 Rally Scotland in 2010 with a Ford Fiesta S2000. He came in seventh place in overall standings. Mikkelsen rode a Super 2000 car in three WRC rounds, and she took the SWRC class at the 2010 Wales Rally GB championship.

Mikkelsen joined the Skoda UK Motorsport team for the 2011 IRC season after a stellar 2010 campaign.

Mikkelsen was off to a rocky start in 2011 when he rode for Skoda UK Motorsport in the IRC. Rally Monte-Carlo, Mikkelsen, was forced to retire only after SS1 in the first rally of the season. Sata Rallye Açores, where he finished second, his first ever podium appearance in the IRC, was at a turning point of the season. Rally Cyprus, five drivers, five drivers, were competing for the drivers championship prior to the season's last rally. Mikkelsen, the youngest person to win the IRC since winning Rally Cyprus, took home the award.

Mikkelsen maintained his IRC dominance in the 2012 season, winning the drivers championship after winning at Azores and Romania plus five second place finishes. Mikkelsen is the first person to win the IRC (now ERC) twice in a row.

Mikkelsen competed for Volkswagen Motorsport II in their factory Polo WRC from 2013 to 2016. He did not make it to the podium during the 2013 season, but he did win a few special stages, finishing 10th overall standings. With three second place finishes and two third place finishes, he finished the year in third place in championship overall standings. He won his first rally victory in Spain in 2015 and seven third place awards, securing him his third position in the world championship. Mikkelsen won two more titles in Poland and Australia during the 2016 season, as well as two more in second places, resulting in yet another third place in the championship overall. Mikkelsen had placed third in the championship three times in a row from 2014 to 2016. Volkswagen resigned from WRC at the end of 2016, leaving Mikkelsen without a vehicle for 2017.

With a factory called koda Fabia R5, who won the Monte Carlo Rally and Tour de Corse in early 2017, Mikkelsen reached three rounds of the WRC-2 in early 2017. In mid 2017, he joined the Citron World Rally Team, making his debut with a Citron C3 WRC in Italy. Mikkelsen, who placed second in Germany, has signed a Hyundai Motorsport contract for 2018. He joined close friend Thierry Neuville, Dani Sordo, and Hayden Paddon. He came in fourth place in Welsh Rally GB before the end of the year.

Andreas started off promising with third position in Sweden, but she was interrupted by a string of setbacks and ended the year in sixth position overall. 2019 was much improved. Despite missing out or resigning from six of the 14 WRC events this year, Mikkelsen took first place and two third places to finish in fourth place overall. His Hyundai didn't renew his Hyundai at the end of 2019, leaving Mikkelsen without a WRC drive.

Mikkelsen was left without a vehicle for the 2020 season, so he co-drives Rally Sardegna for 2003 World Drivers' Champion Petter Solberg. They contested the climb in Shakedown and Power Stage with a Citroen C3 WRC equipped with Pirelli tyres that would be used for the 2021 season. He placed 6th in WRC-2 and won in the WRC-3 category at Rally Monza, along with the Eurosol Racing Team.

Mikkelsen joined Toksport for a combined WRC-2 and ERC campaign, resulting in the production of a Koda Fabia R5/Rally2 evo in 2021. He was the first driver to win both WRC-2 and ERC titles in the same year in 2022 and is now the WRC-2 champion. He helped koda Motorsport design the new koda Fabia RS Rally2 during the 2022 Bohemia Rally Mladá Boleslav as the race leader.
