Rosalie Anderson MacDowell (born April 21, 1958) is an American actress and fashion model.
She made her film debut in Greystoke, Lord of the Apes, in 1984 before receiving critical acclaim for her role in Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), for which she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama.

Early life
MacDowell was born in Gaffney, South Carolina, on April 21, 1958, to Pauline "Paula" Johnston, a music teacher, and Marion St. Pierre MacDowell, a lumber executive. Ancestry includes English, French, Scottish, Irish, Irish, and Welsh people. When she was six years old, her mother became an alcoholic and her parents separated when she was six. After being sober for a year, MacDowell's mother died of a heart attack at the age of 53. When MacDowell was eight, her father remarried, this time to former Mary Frances Stone; the union lasted until his death. MacDowell graduated from Gaffney High School in 1976 and went on to Winthrop University for two years before heading to Columbia, South Carolina, for a brief period. MacDowell signed a modeling contract with Elite Model Management in Los Angeles in 1978 after being spotted by a Wilhelmina Models representative while on a trip to Los Angeles.
Personal life
MacDowell married Paul Qualley, a rancher and fellow former model, in 1986. When posing for Gap ads, the two met. They had a son and two daughters, Rainey named Miss Golden Globe 2012, and Margaret, an actor.
In 1999, MacDowell and Qualley divorced. MacDowell began a year-long friendship with actor Dennis Quaid after her divorce from Qualley. MacDowell reconnected with her former high school classmate, Rhett Hartzog, a businessman who married on November 10, 2001, in 1999. In October 2004, the couple divorced. She has lived in Marina del Rey, California, since 2013.
Career
In the early 1980s, MacDowell modeled for Vogue magazine and appeared in ad campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, Vassarette, Armani perfume, Sabeth-Row, Mink International, Anne Klein, and Bill Blass. A series of billboards in Times Square and national television commercials for Calvin Klein won attention and led to her 1984 film debut in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. In this role, MacDowell's lines were dubbed by Glenn Close because her Southern accent was considered too pronounced for her role as Jane. In 1985, MacDowell filled a supporting role as a doctor in St. Elmo's Fire.
