Ander Herrera Career

Club career

Herrera, a native of Bilbao, Basque Country, began his career at Real Zaragoza and made his professional debut in the Segunda División in the 2008–2009 season. As the Aragonese club made a quick return to La Liga, he made 19 appearances during the season. In a 1–0 home win over CD Tenerife on August 29, he made his top-flight debut on his first appearance in 29 August 2009.

Herrera was one of Zaragoza's most valuable players during the 2009–10 campaign, when the club managed to maintain its top-flight status. He scored his first league goal on December 6th, but RCD Mallorca lost by 4–1 away, but not in a 4–1 loss.

Herrera continued to play regularly for Zaragoza in 2010–11, under both José Aurelio Gay and his replacement Javier Aguirre.

Herrera decided to join Athletic Bilbao on a five-year deal, which will come into effect as of July 1st. In his first three seasons, buyout terms were set at €36 million, and in the rest, €40 million.

Herrera made his official debut for Athletic Bilbao on August 18, 2011, playing the full 90 minutes against Trabzonspor in the 2011–12 UEFA Europa League. In his first season with the Basque club, he appeared in 54 official games and scored four goals, winning in both the Copa del Rey and the Europa League. For the first time in 16 years, he played 33 league games as Athletic qualified for the UEFA Champions League in his third and final season.

Herrera was the subject of a £24 million bid from Manchester United in August 2013, but Athletic Bilbao refused him. Manchester United attempted to sign him a year later. Athletic announced on their official website on June 26th that they had turned down a €36 million (£28.85 million) bid from Manchester United for Herrera. Athletic Bilbao later announced that Herrera had activated his buyout provision, allowing United to sign him. Manchester United announced on the same day that they had closed the signing of Herrera on a four-year deal, pending the acquisition of an International Transfer Certificate.

Herrera made his debut in the Premier League's first game of the season on August 16th, a 2–1 home loss to Swansea City. He played 67 minutes before being recalled for Marouane Fellaini. Herrera sustained an injury in preparation and missed Manchester United's next two games against Sunderland and Burnley. Manchester United defeated Queens Park Rangers 4–0 in his first game back from injury, on September 14th, 2014. He scored his first goal for the club and assisted in the game 4–0. In United's 5-3 loss to newly promoted Leicester City on September 21, he scored once more in the club's next game, flicking in ngel Di Mara's shot with his heel.

Herrera scored his first FA Cup goal with a dipping attempt against Yeovil Town on January 4th, 2015. Herrera scored a crucial equalizer against Preston North End in the FA Cup fifth round on Thursday, guaranteeing that the tie will be decided 3–1 and advance to the quarter final stage. Herrera opened a Premier League match against Swansea City on December 2nd for the first time since December 2nd, scoring United's only goal, his fifth of the season, in a 2–1 loss. Herrera scored his first brace of his career on April 4th to help United beat Aston Villa 3-1; he was also named man of the match for his efforts.

In a 4–0 victory (7–1 aggregate) over Belgian side Club Brugge in the second leg of their Champions League play-off, Wayne Rooney's second goal and his fourth goal in his first start of the season. In Manchester United's 3–1 home victory over Liverpool on September 12th, he scored his second goal of the season from the penalty spot. With a 3–0 win over Everton at Goodison Park, he continued his good form in the 2nd Half, in which he scored his second straightay and assisted Rooney in his 2nd half.

Herrera scored his first European goal at Old Trafford on February 25, 2016, a superbly converted penalty in the later stages of a 5–1 loss of FC Midtjylland in the Europa League's Round of 32. Herrera scored the winning goal in a 3–2 victory over Arsenal earlier this week. Herrera was instrumental in United's victory over Everton at Wembley on Thursday, when the Frenchman converted as an 87th-minute replacement for Marouane Fellaini, resulting in a thrilling 2–1 victory and sending United through to the final. United defeated Crystal Palace 2–1 in the final, securing the cup and Herrera's first major award with United.

Herrera's debut under new boss José Mourinho was limited to substitute appearances, with Fellaini preferred in midfield alongside world record signing Paul Pogba. Herrera did get off to a promising start in United's third round match against Northampton Town in which he made his first goal of the 2016–17 campaign, winning by a landslide. He was later retained in the starting lineup for the Premier League match against champions Leicester City and his side won by a convincing 4–1 victory. Herrera was lauded both against Leicester City and in the games that followed, and was named man of the match for his efforts in restricting Manchester United to a 0–0 draw at Anfield.

He was named in the starting lineup for the 2017 EFL Cup Final victory over Southampton at Wembley Stadium, and he was also responsible for Zlatan Ibrahimovi's second goal of the match, which gave United a 3–2 lead and ultimately secured Herrera's second major trophy with United. After being suspended against Chelsea on March 13th for the first time in the FA Cup, he turned IN a man of the match display against Old Trafford, assisting Marcus Rashford for the first goal and then himself for the second goal, which put United in the Premier League's top-four finish and extending their unbeaten run to twenty-two matches.

Herrera was given the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award on May 18, 2017. Herrera was named game's man of the match award for his efforts in the Manchester Arena bombing, which took place a few days before.

Herrera's chances of playing with the arrival of Nemanja Mati, seemed to be diminishing, but the team stayed with the team and fought for his position. In a 4–0 FA Cup fourth round victory over Yeovil Town on January 26, 2018, he scored his first goal of the season. In a 2–1 victory over Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley on April 21, he scored the winning goal.

Herrera was a member of Manchester United's starting eleven to play Southampton after the November international break. Herrera scored his first goal of the season on the game, earning equalizer in the 2nd draw. Herrera also started in United's midweek game against Arsenal, where he scored the assist for United's first goal by Martial. Herrera started with United's first match with Ole Gunnar Solskjr as boss, with Herrera scoring his second goal of the match, which saw United defeat Cardiff City 5–1. Herrera scored the first in a 2–0 victory over Chelsea on February 18, securing United's slot in the FA Cup's sixth round. Herrera was announced as Manchester United's February player of the month on March 1st.

Herrera will leave United at the end of the season on May 11, 2019.

Herrera had signed a five-year deal with Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain on July 4th (PSG). In a 1–0 victory over Strasbourg on September 14, he made his PSG debut on September 14th. In a 4–4 league tie against Amiens on February 15, Herrera scored his first goal for the club. Herrera's first season at PSG was a champion of the Coupe de France, the Trophée des Champions, and runner-up in the UEFA Champions League. Herrera's second season in Paris scored one goal in 45 games as the club defeated the Coupe de France, the Trophée des Champions, and advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Herrera scored a brace against Clermont on Monday, his second brace of his career, after losing 4–0 in the league on September 11, 2021. In a 1–1 draw against Club Brugge, he scored his first Champions League goal in the tournament proper, a low-driven, left-footed shot from the middle of the penalty area.

Herrera signed for his former club Athletic Bilbao on a season-long loan with an option-to-buy on August 27, 2022.

Athletic Bilbao celebrate their Copa del Rey triumph in style as hundreds of thousands of fans line the streets to watch victorious squad parade their first trophy for 40 years down the river

Large raucous crowds flocked to the city centre to party alongside the players, who boarded a barge known as the 'Gabarra', and sailed down to the city hall. The journey stretched 13km and stretched from the town of Getxo to the very heart of the sprawling de-facto Basque capital, where the elation continued. Supporters lined both banks of the river and crammed into every nook, including on the balconies dotted around every street, and waved flags and scarves. Ernesto Valderde's side beat Mallorca on penalties in the dramatic Copa del Rey final in Seville to clinch their first piece of silverware since a domestic double in 1984. Players from that team, who have been immortalised in Bilbao's bars and restaurants after their momentous achievement, also joined in the celebrations.

PSG's Last Dance: As they prepare to wave Kylian Mbappe off and bring the curtain down on their £1BILLION Galactico era in favour of a 'new identity' - it's now or never for their Champions League 'obsession'

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 10, 2024
Once they step out of the eye of the storm it is easier for players and managers to see just how destabilising Paris Saint-Germain's obsession to win the Champions League has been. 'The pressure for the Champions League was too strong,' now-Chelsea centre back Thiago Silva, who spent eight years at PSG, told Le Parisien last year. 'It was something that hurt me because I saw the situation change, and the pressure increased to win. But that's not how you win. It's a question of consistency year after year.'
