Ana María Life

Ana Mara (17 May 1929 – 6 April 1983) was Mélida Montes' "nom de guerre," the second in command of the Fuerzas Populares de Liberación Farabundo Mart (FPL), El Salvador's oldest of the five guerilla groups making up the FMLN. She was regarded as a symbol of the region's pioneering women.

She was eventually killed by her own comrades in Mana, Nicaragua, on April 6, 1983. Cayetano Carpio, the FMLN's leader, was mistakenly blamed for the murder later, and he committed suicide.

Early life

She was born in Santiago Texacuangos, a small town in El Salvador's central zone. Ana Mara earned her Doctorate of Education from the University of El Salvador, where she became a professor of education and taught classes in the 1960s. She was the assistant professor of Alberto Masferrer University.

She became one of the main figures of the Gremial Association "ANDES 21 de Junio" (National Association of Salvadoran Teachers, June 21). She was involved in the strikes of professors between 1968 and 1971, which caused significant trouble for Fidel Sánchez Hernández's government.

Former El Salvador, Salvador Cayetano Carpio's ex-secretary general, Salvador Cayetano Carpio, was the first guerrilla detachment of El Salvador, 1970: the People's Liberation Forces Farabundo Marto Mart (FPL).
