Amos Bernard Muvengwa Midzi (July 4, 1952 – June 9, 2015) was a Zimbabwean politician who served in the Cabinet as Minister of Energy and Power Development from 2002 to 2009.

Political career

From 1987 to 1993, he served as Zimbabwe Ambassador to Cuba. Midzi was appointed Ambassador to the United States in 1993, but he served until 1997 as a member of the ZANU-PF political party. In March 2002, he ran as the ZANU-PF candidate for Mayor of Harare, Zimbabwe's capital, but was defeated by Movement for Democratic Change, Elias Mudzuri. Midzi received 596 votes out of a total of 2262,275 for Mudzuri. He was born on August 25, 2002, as Minister of Electricity and Power Development; then, he was appointed Minister of Mines and Mining Development; later, he was named Minister of Mines and Mining Development. He has also served as the ZANU-PF Chairman for Harare. He was added to the United States sanctions list in 2003 and remained there until his death.

In the March 2008 parliamentary election, Midzi was nominated by ZANU-PF as the candidate for the seat from Epworth, a suburb of Harare. He was defeated by MDC's Jembere Elias after receiving 4,758 votes against Elias' 6,220 votes.

Midzi and 11 other cabinet members were dismissed from the Cabinet earlier this week, according to the Herald, because he no longer held a seat in Parliament.

Midzi's death, according to reports on June 9, 2015, were immediately classified as suicide.

Following Midzi's death, it was also revealed that foul play had been suspected, despite claims that his car keys were missing. A post-mortem carried out on his body revealed that he had been poisoned and was buried at Glen Forest Memorial Park later this year.
