The statue had been temporarily taken away for'maintenance and cleaning,' according to university of Southern California officials, but did not specify when it would be returned. Following the ceremonial plinth's deposition, it now appears that it was covertly deleted in the hopes of not drawing attention to their decision. Widney was a respected lawyer and judge, but his participation in the Home Guard Vigilance Committee in the late 1800s allegedly saw him murder Native Americans and people of color in extralegal lynchings. Widney's legacy for the Los Angeles Times in 2020 was determined to be a'most certainly' promoter of extrajudicial lynchings,' according to a professor and scholar at UC Merced.
