Alina Cojocaru Career

Professional career

Cojocaru was given a deal to join The Royal Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet after six months of training at the Royal Ballet School. She was also offered a deal as principal to join the Kiev Ballet. She joined Kiev Ballet in November 1998, wishing to gain more experience as a principal dancer. She appeared in a variety of roles throughout one season.

While performing with the Kiev Ballet, Cojocaru re-applied to the Royal Ballet in London, but was only allowed to audition for the corps de ballet. She attended an audition for the company when she was on leave from Kiev Ballet and was offered a job. She accepted the job and joined the company in November 1999, despite being skeptical of growth prospects elsewhere. She was then promoted to principal dancer in 2001. In 2004, she was awarded the Prix Benois de la Danse for her portrayal of Cinderella.

Cojocaru's early appearances with the company included performances in the inaugural gala for the newly renovated Royal Opera House, as a snowflake in The Nutcracker and as a doll in Coppélia.

Johan Kobborg, the Danish principal dancer, is one of her career's highlights. Since Cojocaru took responsibility for an injured Miyako Yoshida, the partnership began in 2001 when they danced together in Romeo and Juliet. Since then, Kobborg and Cojocaru's relationship has been described as one of the best in ballet history, and they have performed together at Covent Garden and around the world.

In 2012, Cojocaru became the first ballerina to receive the Prix Benois de la Danse twice, this time for John Neumeier's Liliom with the Hamburg Ballet. Julie's lead role also marked the first time a full ballet was produced in Cojocaru.

In June 2013, she and Kobborg announced that they would leave The Royal Ballet at the end of the 2012/13 season. The company's last show in London was in Mayerling on 5 June, and then their scheduled performances in Tokyo on October 10 and 12 July.

Following her release from the Royal Ballet, Cojocaru joined the English National Ballet as a principal dancer in July 2013. Tamara Rojo, her former Royal Ballet colleague, is also a guest at the Hamburg Ballet. She now divides her time between London and Hamburg, where she began a close creative friendship with John Neumeier.

After Kobborg became the company's artistic director, she joined the Romanian National Ballet as a principal in December 2013. However, in 2016, steps taken by new leadership at the Bucharest National Opera House resulted in the departures of both Kobborg and Cojocaru, sparking protests by dancers. They were apparently forbidden from even walking in the theatre by the new company's new owners.

For her portrayal of the title role in Akram Khan's Giselle, she received the Critics' Circle National Dance Awards 2017 Outstanding Female Performance (Classical). Alina at Sadler's Wells Theatre, she produced a self-produced performance in 2020. The exhibition included Frederick Ashton's Marguerite and Armand, as well as Tim Rushton's Reminiscence, a new commission work that was performed with Johan Kobborg.

The English National Ballet's Charlotte Moore revealed in November 2020 that she would leave the company as a result of her employment. Clara in The Nutcracker's last work with the firm came in January.
