Professional career
He won the Lineal and WBA Bantamweight championship on March 14, 1975, two years after turning pro. Zamora defended his title twice a year, defeating Thanomchit Sukhothai and Socrates Batoto. He knocked out future hall-of-famer Eusebio Pedroza in the second round on April 3, 1976. He defended his title later this year after losing to Gilberto Illueca and a rematch with Soo-Hwan Hong.
Carlos Zárate Serna, a fellow Mexican legend, was fighting contemporaneously and winning the WBC crown. Both were inevitable, and the two teams met in a non-title match on April 23, 1977. Zamora came out on top of a 29-fight record, all by knockout. Zarate's record was one of 45 fights, 45 victories, with 44 KOs. Zarate defeated Zamora in the fourth round of a long-awaited match.
Zamora never seemed to recover from this loss. Jorge Luján lost his Lineal and WBA Bantamweight titles to him in the tenth round of the championship tournament. His results after were spotty, and Eddie Logan, who sported a record of 5 victories and 7 losses, even stopped him on November 16, 1979. He resigned after losing to Rigoberto Estrada on 19 September 1980 after losing by a knockout. Zamora was supposed to face Wilfredo Gómez in 1983, but the match was eventually called off.
Zamora was a knockout hunter, but after his humiliating loss to Zarate, he seemed to lose hope. Despite that, he was ranked 47 on The Ring's list of the top punchers of all time. He had 33 victories, 32 KOs, and 5 losses in his last career appearance.
