Career
As a child in Sydney, O'Loughlin began working in short films and fringe theatre. As an extra in a commercial, playing a Marine, one of his first acting roles was an extra. After graduating from NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts), he began working in Australian television and film productions. BlackJack: Sweet Science, Love Bytes, and White Collar Blue are only three of his television appearances.
He appeared in Oyster Farmer in 2004, his first film role. He appeared in Man-Thing, Feed, and The Amazing Journey of Mary Bryant, an Australian mini-series for which he was voted Best Lead Actor in Television from the Australian Film Institute Awards in 2005 and as the Most Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series from the Logie Awards in 2006. Detective Kevin Hiatt, the newest member of the strike team, joined O'Loughlin in the cast of The Shield in 2007.
He screen-tested for James Bond's movie role in 2005. "I worked with [director] Martin Campbell here in Los Angeles on the Sony [Pictures] lot, and he asked me to fly to London and test, and we did at Pinewood [Studios]. It was the biggest screen test I've ever taken. It was very comprehensive. For the cut, I had tuxedos and suits, as well as hair cuts."
After winning the lead role on CBS' Moonlight, where he played private investigator and vampire Mick St. John, he left The Shield in 2007. The writers strike in Hollywood halted Moonlight's filming. There was rumors that the series would be cancelled, but fan pressure prevailed and the show was given four additional episodes to try to regain its audience share. Following a shoulder injury, CBS announced on March 2nd that O'Loughlin would miss shooting certain episodes of Hawaii Five-0 to seek pain management after a shoulder injury. At least one episode from the second season had been scheduled, but he was supposed to miss at least one episode.
In August 2013, Los Angeles-based non-profit Australians in Film announced that O'Loughlin would be honoured with a Breakthrough Award at a ceremony held on October 24th, 2013.
