Alan White (born 14 June 1949) is an English drummer and songwriter best known for his time with Yes, a progressive rock band formed in 1972.
After John Lennon invited him to perform at the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival Festival in 1969, he joined the Plastic Ono Band.
White continued to perform on other albums from artists such as George Harrison, Ginger Baker's Air Force, Terry Reid, and Terry Reid's "Imagine." Bill Bruford, the original drummer, was hired by Yes in July 1972 as a replacement for the original drummer.
After the death of bassist Chris Squire in 2015, White became the band's longest-remaining member, having never left the band since joining. In addition, White has appeared on over 50 albums by other artists, including Joe Cocker, Ginger Baker, and The Ventures.
In 2017, White was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes in 2017.
Personal life and death
Gigi White was married for more than 40 years and lived in Newcastle, Washington; they were married for more than 40 years. Jesse (also a singer) and Cassi had two children. In 1997, he was dubbed the best man at Jon Anderson's wedding.
Following a brief illness, White died at his Newcastle home on May 26th, 2022, aged 72. It had been revealed four days before that he would be unable to attend the Close to the Edge 50th anniversary tour due to health problems.
Many personal possessions and valuable musical equipment were stolen from White's house and a nearby storage facility two months before his death. On the Plastic Ono Band sessions, stolen or damaged items included platinum records and a drum kit that White had used.
On October 2, 2022, Yes and White members as well as other VIPs including former Yes and White guitarist Trevor Rabin were invited to a tribute concert for White.
