Alan Cross Career

Career

He joined CFNY as an overnight announcer on October 3, 1986.

Cross was the station's afternoon drive-time host in 1989. He returned to afternoon drive in 1993 and stayed there until 2001. He began in February 1993 as the host of The Ongoing History of New Music.

Cross left CJX in 2001 to become program director of CJX in Hamilton, where he oversaw the station's frequency change to Y108. He continued to host The Ongoing History of New Music during this period. He returned to CFNY in mid-January 2004 as program director before launching the ExploreMusic project in 2008, although CFNY still broadcasts The Ongoing History of New Music until 2011. On aux.tv, he also hosted ExploreMusic, the television show on a computer.

After the company restructured their online content group, Cross left Corus Entertainment in early July 2011. Cross said in a Toronto Star interview that there was no difference between himself and Corus. Because Corus Entertainment owns the show, Cross' departure brings an end to The Ongoing History of New Music.

For Astral Media, he began presenting on a new show, The Secret History of Rock. In 2013, he joined Rock95 Broadcasting as a music consultant and part-time on-air host. Cross also maintained his own personal music blog, A Journal of Musical Things, in 2009; when he became the first music critic in the country to publish an advance review of U2's new single "Get On Your Boots," he attracted worldwide notice.

He was named as the head of music curation for Songza's operations in Canada in 2014 and curated a museum exhibit on rock music for the Ontario Science Centre in 2014. In the fall of that year, he returned to CFNY and relaunched The Ongoing History of New Music, as well as a new weekday programming feature called Adventures in Vinyl. In 2015, Dave Charles founded Major League Mixes with colleague Dave Charles; the organization currently has the privileges for game music at Toronto Maple Leafs games.
