Filmmaking career
Chopra began filmmaking at the age of 18, as an assistant director, filming with his father on films including Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991) and Darr (1993). He directed his first screenplays for his father's Parampara (1992) and his mother's independently produced film Aaina (1993), the only film not directed by his father that he worked on. Chopra began working with Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, the all-time blockbuster, together with Shahrukh Khan and Kajol for which he was the director and writer, after gaining a decent amount of experience. Chopra scripted the film and produced by his father, Yash Chopra, under the YRF banner. Chopra began working on the film's script in 1990, at the age of 19, and gradually spent time on about five drafts of the film's original script. Even after Chopra managed to convince his brother Uday Chopra and cousin Karan Johar, both young filmmakers, to work as assistant directors with the film, he was able to convince him. Chopra once said that the presence of his relatives during the film making of the film provided tremendous emotional support. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge went on to become one of the greatest hits of all time, receiving the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
Chopra eventually continued to write the dialogue and the tale of his father's 1997 blockbuster Dil To Pagal Hai, which received the National Award, was also published under YRF. Mohabbath Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan, which gave the yesteryear actor a new lease on life and brought him closer to filmmaking, as well as his brother Uday Chopra into film, was his next film as a director. Chopra wrote and co-produced the film, and it did well at the box office, and it did a good job at the box office. Vivek Oberoi versus Rani Mukerji in December 2002, the studio's last release of the year.
Under the YRF banner, Chopra produced Hum Tum, Dhoom, and Veer Zaara (for which he was also the screenwriter). All three films went on to become influential and profitable blockbusters, grossing more than 200,000 crore (unadjusted for inflation) in the global market. The films were released in 2004 as the seventh, fourth, and highest-grossing Indian films of the year. Throughout the year, the company received the majority of the Indian film awards, with Veer Zaara winning the National Award. This was considered a major breakthrough for this film production company and established its position as the head of the Indian Entertainment industry for the next decade to date.
Chopra has since produced and written many other highly acclaimed and critically acclaimed films, including Bunty Aur Babli, Salaam Namaste, Fanaa, Dhoom 2 and Chak De India, which also received the National Award. Chopra directed his third film as a director in 2008 with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi starring Shahrukh Khan and launching newcomer Anushka Sharma. At the time, the film was the highest-grossing film for Shahrukh Khan and the YRF, grossing 172 crore (US$22 million) in the global market. These films made them one of India's most prominent film production firms, earning Aditya Chopra an estimated net worth of 6,350 crore (US$800 million) (trade and stock market estimate) and making Chopra one of the country's most influential people.
During the years, YRF employed a number of budding screenwriters and directors. Kunal Kohli, Kabir Khan, Sanjay Gadhvi, Siddharth Anand, Sanjay Sahni, Sandeep Sahni, Taddee, Shaad Ali, Maneesh Sharma, and Vijay Acharya were among the first scriptwriters and screenwriters to debut under YRF and have gone on to become independent entities in films, including Karan Johar (his Kuch Hota Hai was co-produced and released by Yash Film Distributors and Film Distributors, Sanjay Gadhni, Sidhni, Kunal Sahni, Sidhni, Habib Film Distributors, Habib Fahni, Maneeeeeeeeeehni Khay Sahni, Maneei, Maneeee Film Distributors), Kunal Film Distributa Hai Hai Yash Raj Film Distributors and Film Distributa Hai ontarishni, Maneehni, Jai, Maneehni, Maneedhni, Kunal Sahni, Khay Film Distribut Film Distributin and Published under Yash Khan, Mane Film Distributors and Film Distributors and Film Distributors and Film Distributors and Film Distributors and Film Distributors and Production and Filmshni, Maneeedhni, Kunal Film Distributors and Screenwritershni Under their banner, the company also produced films for filmmakers such as Anil Mehta and Pradeep Sarkar. Chopra's directorial return, Befikre, is set for a December 2016 debut, according to YRF in September 2015. Ranveer Singh and Vain Kapoor were cast in the lead roles in October 2015. The film's soundtrack will be produced by Vishal-Shekhar and Jaideep Sahni, both of whom will return to work with YRF after nearly nine years. This will be Chopra's directorial comeback after only eight years (his Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi debut in 2008). In the month of October, a theatrical trailer for the film was unveiled at the Eiffel Tower and on social media platforms. On December 9, 2016, the film was released on 2900 screens worldwide and was budgeted at 70,000 (US$8.8 million) (including P&A) and broadcast on 2900 screens (including P&A). It gained widespread negative reviews on websites and suffered huge losses as a result of the currency demonetization that was implied by the government of India a few days prior to its launch. After a two-week theatrical run at the global box office struggling to handle break-even sales for YRF, the film managed to gross 63 crore (US$7.9 million).
Career as studio executive
He is also the current Chairman of India's multi-national film, television, and entertainment conglomerate Yash Raj Films (YRF), becoming the second individual to hold the position in the company's history after Sanjeev Kohli. Chopra has delivered several commercially viable projects, including offbeat content that is not immediately appropriate for "masala films." Chopra is the first to move toward the film studio model through independent projects led by talent under his banner. At YRF Studios (co-founded by his ex-wife Payal Khanna), where Chopra serves as Chief Executive, major post-production work is complete. Chopra fought a $3.7 billion hostile takeover bid by Disney in December 2009, shortly after the acquisitions of Pixar and Marvel. When Disney acquired UTV at $500 million, YRF continued as a domestic entity aided by the Tata Sons. Dick Cook of Disney and Sanjeev Kohli of YRF followed this, and Sanjeev Kohli from YRF followed them. YRF's valuation hit by SEBI in January 2019, making it the country's largest film production company in the history of Indian Cinema; Disney pulled all Indian film operations and was liquidated the same year.
His company acquired the reputation of a film mogul through distribution networks around the globe, in addition to emerging as an equitable brand. The Film Division of India has later awarded him with the National Award for his achievements in 1995, 2005, 2007, and 2015. He refused him admission to the NSD due to his extreme stammering as a young candidate. Both Chopra and Mani Ratnam's government in India requested that all content created locally under its Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat programs be examined. The Producers Guild of America gave him membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in June 2018. Chopra denied offering licensing contracts with Amazon, Netflix, and Apple TV+ preferring a traditional cinema display in May 2020. YRF also agreed to offer Tata ELXSI's own OTT service the same year. Widely regarded as one of India's most influential executives.
