Early years
Anina Kirstina Petra Jensen was born in Hinnerup, Denmark, about 30 people north of Aarhus, Denmark. Alexandre Genée, her uncle, began teaching her dance at the age of three. Alexandre and his wife, former Antonia Zimmerman, adopted her when she was eight years old. Adelina Patti, the Italian opera singer, was given Adeline in honor of her second name. Genée's debut was with her uncle's touring company in Oslo at the age of ten (at that time, called Christiania).
She became Copenhagen's most popular dancer in 1895. She appeared with the Berlin Royal Opera Ballet and the Munich Opera Ballet in 1896.
