Abigail Lucy Cruttenden (born 23 March 1968) is an English actress. In several episodes of the TV show Sharpe, Cruttenden starred Sean Bean as his character Richard Sharpe's onscreen wife Jane.
Anna has appeared on the sitcom Not Going Out as Anna since 2014.
Personal and family life
Cruttenden lives in East Sheen, south-west London. She was first married to actor Sean Bean, who appeared on his television show Sharpe from 1997 to 2000, but Jonathan R Fraser has been married since 2003.
She comes from a family with a tradition of acting. Cynthia Coatts (1915-2013) founded the Rosslyn School of Dance and Drama in London, while Julia Cruttenden (1938-2013) ran the London stage make-up school Greasepaint. Neville (1940-1990), her father, was an advertising executive who indulged in amateur theatrics before deciding to become a professional actor at 49. Hal Cruttenden, the stand-up comedian, is her brother, and Hannah, the older sister who works in journalism, is her sister.
Career
Cruttenden began acting when she was 12 years old, when she appeared in BBC2 Playhouse episode Elizabeth Alone in 1981. In only her second screen appearance in the critically acclaimed television film P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang, she played the object of love to a loving schoolboy in the coming of age story, which was written by Jack Rosenthal. She didn't know she'd have to kiss co actor John Albasiny towards the film's climax in a newspaper interview in 1996. "I was 14 and painfully shy, like my heroine." I vividly recall them saying we were supposed to kiss at the end. Because it wasn't in the script, I was thrown out completely. My eyes welled up with tears, and I mumbled, "All right then." But I'd never kissed anyone before, ever. It was all rather frightening."
She continued to do regular acting work throughout her teenage years, including a regular appearance in the TV series "Intimate Contact (1985-86), and "Hans My Hedgehog" in 1987. Despite coming from a family involved in acting, her parents were keen for her to concentrate more on her education. Cruttenden, on the other hand, was still committed to acting, and when she was given the opportunity to appear in Romeo and Juliet halfway through her four A levels, she leapt at the chance. "I promised that I'd return and watch them but I never did," she said afterwards.
Neville, her father's death, who died as a result of a stomach ulcer at the age of 50, died in 1990. He had only worked as an advertising executive the year before he was killed, and he had appeared in two television shows in the pipeline prior to his sudden death. Cruttenden delved into her acting career, appearing on television shows TECX, Coasting, and Centrepoint (all 1990), and Sherlock Holmes' detective story, Van Der Valk and The Casebook, 1991.
She appeared on television for the first time in three years in the television period comedy drama Love on a Branch Line in 1994, a role that necessitated her to appear nude. Jane Gibbons appeared in the television series Sharpe as the love interest and eventual wife of Richard Sharpe, played by Sean Bean in 1996. She became a regular in the cast and began a life imitating art with her partner Bean. Unfortunately, Bean was already married to 2nd wife Melanie Hill who had filed for divorce. Cruttenden and Bean were married at Hendon Registry Office a few months later on November 22, 1997. In 1999, the couple had a child together, but the pair divorced the following year.
Jonathan R Fraser's second marriage attempt in 2003. She found regular work in theatre and television, starring in Doctors and Nurses (2004) and The Robinsons (2005), but it wasn't until she was cast in Benidorm in 2007 that she got her second hit show. She appeared in the first three series before relocating to the program in 2009.
There was a dearth of screen roles for the next five years, with only one appearing in an episode of the TV sitcom The Royal Bodyguard in 2012 at this time. Cruttenden's double family bereavement occurred in 2013. Cynthia Coatts, 97, died on March 16th. Julia Binn died on December 14th after a long fight with a brain tumor. Despite this, she won a television sitcom Not Going Out in which she appeared as Anna, Hugh Dennis' wife, and a snobby neighbor to Lee and Lucy. This was her second appearance on the show, and she has appeared on the show regularly since 2014.
