Abe Laboriel Jr. Life

Abraham "Abe" Laboriel Jr. (born March 23, 1971) is an American session drummer.

He is the son of Mexican bass guitarist Abraham Laboriel, nephew of Mexican rocker Johnny Laboriel, and brother of record producer, songwriter, and film composer Mateo Laboriel.

He has performed for Paul McCartney, as well as the French singer Mylène Farmer, among other things.

Early life

Abraham Laboriel, Abe's son, grew up playing drums from the age of four. His mother is a classically trained singer.

Laboriel was taught by well-known percussionists and drummers, including Jeff Porchley, Chester Thompson, as well as Bill Maxwell and Alex Acua, who formed the band Koinonia with his father in the 1980s.

During his junior year in high school, he attended the Dick Grove School of Music, learning with Peter Donald. In his senior year, he attended the Hamilton High School Academy of Music in Los Angeles. Here he first experienced the use of computers and became a member of a marching band. He formed a jazz trio with Vernell Brown and Mike Elizondo. The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts and Downbeat magazine honoured him in 1989. He then attended Berklee College of Music, where he graduated in 1993.

Paul McCartney's album, Driving Rain, told producer David Kahne that he wanted to return to the spontaneity he remembered when working with The Beatles. He recalled that his bandmates and producer would often be hearing the songs he had written at the beginning of the recording session for the first time, when he had no time to learn or rehearse. McCartney thought this made the recordings sound "fresh" and told Kahne that he wanted to record this album in the same way. Kahne assembled a team of session musicians, Laboriel included, who had never met McCartney until their first day in the studio together, in order to achieve this. Laboriel has been a member of McCartney's recording and touring band ever since.

Together with Michael Landau, Laboriel was part of a power trio known as The Raging Honkies. He is part of Chocolate Genius, Inc., Inc.'s group.

Laboriel performed a duet "Les Mots" ("The words") with Mylène Farmer in 2006, during the show "Avant que l'ombre à Bercy" ("Before the shadow..." He appeared with Sting at the Montreux Jazz Festival this year. Following their Japanese tour the year before, Laboriel toured with Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood on their 14-date American Tour in 2009. He made his live debut with Paul McCartney in 2001 at The Concert for New York City, and has appeared on every McCartney tour since then.

Laboriel plays bass, guitar, and keyboards in addition to drums. He'll occasionally switch to one of these instruments to suit certain songs on his 2013 solo album Naked, and he played every instrument when touring with McCartney.

Laboriel played drums on Jerry Cantrell's album Brighten in 2021. He contributed drums and percussion to "Mrs. Mills" on Pearl Jam's latest solo album Earthling.
