ZZ Ward (born Zsuzsanna Eva Ward) is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. On May 8, 2012, Ward unveiled her debut EP, Criminal.

On October 16, 2012, Til the Casket Drops, her debut album, was released.

"Put The Gun Down," her first album, made it to the top ten on the AAA radio charts on February 3, 2013, and then fell into the top ten on the Billboard Alternative chart, where it also broke into the top 40.

Ward released the single "The Deep" on March 2, 2017 (featuring Joey Purp).

The Storm, her second studio album, debuted on June 30, 2017, debuting at number 1 on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart in July 2017.

Early life

Ward grew up in Roseburg, Oregon. At the age of 12, she formed her first band in Roseburg with her father. Ward recalled that the first song she performed was "an Albert King track titled 'As the Years Go By'."

Zsuzsanna Friedman, Ward's maternal grandmother, converted to Catholicism in order to avoid persecution during the Holocaust. Ward, who grew up in a secular household, was fascinated in reclaiming her Jewish roots on discovering this.

Personal life

In May 2017, Ward married E. Kidd Bogart, a record producer. Ezra Jack Bogart, the couple's first child, was born on February 3, 2021. Ward revealed her pregnancy in November 2020 in her album "Giant."

Ward began recording the Criminal EP, as well as Eleven Roses, a free mixtape on which she displayed her interpretations of songs by Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Tyler, the Creator, and Wiz Khalifa, after moving to Los Angeles and joining E. Kidd Bogart's Boardwalk Entertainment Group. It was released on September 3rd, 2011: Better Of Dead, Got It Bad, Overdue, Deacon, Criminal, Morphine, and Cinnamon Stix. She performed "Criminal" on film and sampled the beat from "Oil Money" by Freddie Gibbs, who was so impressed by Ward's revival that he asked to write a guest verse to the EP's official version. The Criminal EP was released on May 8, 2012, and it includes the songs "Til the Casket Drops," "Put the Gun Down," "Move Like U Stole It," and "Criminal" (feat. Freddie Gibbs (the British Prime Minister) is the product of his time in office.

Til the Casket Drops, Ward's debut album, was released on October 16, 2012. It includes the singles "365 Days," "Put the Gun Down," and "Last Love Song," Kendrick Lamar's hit "Cryin' Wolf," as well as performances from Ryan Tedder, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Theron "Neff-U" Feemster, and the Tantrums. On VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live with Carrie Keagan on September 19, 2012, Ward performed the album's first single, "Put The Gun Down," and Conan on January 10, 2013. Ward was named one of Fuse TV's 30 must-see artists at SXSW in March 2013. "Her enthusiasm evokes Tina Turner's, her chops Aretha Franklin's, and her soul Etta James'," the New York Times said of her. On March 7, 2013, Ward appeared on Good Morning America and Big Morning Buzz Live; on the September 3, 2013 episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno; and on the January 30, 2014 episode of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Ward unveiled her 365 Days of ZZ Ward app in May 2013 in conjunction with her second single launch.

Ward released a limited edition 7-inch vinyl on April 20, 2013 with her cover of "Grinnin in Your Face", written and originally released by Son House, and "Everybody Wants to Be Famous." Ward's portrait was on the 7-inch jacket, and she included an image from when she was 11 years old.

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Bonnaroo Music Festival, and a short tour with Eric Clapton were among the notable live performances in 2014.

Love and War, Ward's second EP, was released on Hollywood Records on August 28, 2015.

Ward released the single "The Deep" on March 2, 2017, starring Chicago MC Joey Purp. The track is based on a sample of "As Long As I've Got You" by The Charmels, which is also included in "C.R.E.M." Wu-Tang Clan is a video game. Ward's feelings of being trapped in a bad situation are the subject of the album. On March 9, 2017, the song's music video debuted on W magazine's website. Ward appeared on "Ride" from Pixar's film Cars 3. On April 17, 2017, Ward appeared on "Ride" on Dancing with the Stars.

Ward appeared at the American Music Association's tribute concert to Loretta Lynn at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California, on February 11, 2017. She appeared at the inaugural Arroyo Seco Weekend festival in Pasadena, California, in June 2017.

Through Hollywood Records, Ward's second studio album, The Storm, was released on June 30, 2017. In July 2017, it reached number 1 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart, at number 12 on the Billboard Rock Albums chart, and at number 75 on the Billboard 200. In July 2017, a music video for the single "Cannonball" (featuring Fantastic Negrito) was released (featuring Fantastic Negrito).
